Craft Ideas for Kids of All Ages

Craft items make excellent gifts for any child. Whether you are in need of a present for a child you don't know or a child you do know, a craft related gift is usually suitable. There are many choices for craft related gifts, you can go with an array of supplies or stick with a specific craft kit. Knowing what crafts are most suitable for children and which are best received is the key to selecting the perfect gift.

Age Eight and Under
Younger children not only have a different crafting skill set, but they also have different interest. Children under five need very simple crafts. Giving them finger paints and finger painting paper is great. Modeling clay is another idea that works well. Young children also like making collages, so giving them a box filled with glue, paper and items that can be glued is always a nice idea. When a child gets closer to eight you can go with more complex crafts that require a bit more dexterity. Some suggestions would be simple jewelry making kits, frame making kits, jewelry box kits, lacing projects, pipe cleaner crafts and easy wood painting projects.

Age Eight and Over
Older children tend to gravitate towards more difficult complex crafts. They want to make things they can use, give as a gift, or trade with their friends. Sewing kits are great for older kids. Things like needle point, latch hook, plastic canvas, and crocheting are also great. Simple wood working projects like bird house kits, jewelry box kits and napkin holders are good for older kids as well. Children this age like making friendship bracelets to exchange with their friends. You can buy gimp for this and also embroidery thread. Additionally, kids this age enjoy candle making kits, soap making, t-shirt painting, pot holder looms, small weaving looms, model kits and more complex jewelry and beading projects.

The most important thing to consider when you are getting a child a craft is their age. Knowing how old they are will give you an indication of what they are capable of and what safety precautions you may need to consider when buying for them. If a craft you purchase is well received not only does it give you more ideas for that child's next occasion, but it gives you an idea of what other kids there age will like.
