Craft Ideas: Make a Terra Cotta Clay Flowerpot Candle Holder

Kassidy Emmerson
The growing season is done here in the midwest, and the holidays are upon us. It's now time to think about craft ideas you can use to decorate your house for Thanksgiving, Christmas or the New Year. If you have a leftover terra cotta clay flowerpot with a saucer, you can easily make a candle holder for a pillar candle. This craft is inexpensive and easy-to-do. The end result is a unique candle holder that will make a great decoration- and an interesting conversation piece- for your home. If you need a Christmas present for that "hard-to-buy-for" someone, you can make a terra cotta clay flowerpot candle holder and give it to them as a gift.

Materials You Need to Make a Terra Cotta Clay Flowerpot Candle Holder

Terra cotta clay flowerpot that measures about 4 inches across the top
Terra cotta clay saucer (same size as the flowerpot)
Acrylic paint
Paint brushes
Hot glue gun
Wooden cut outs

You can buy a terra cotta clay flowerpot and saucer at a local garden supply store. The remaining materials for the candle holder can be purchased at a craft store.

Instructions to Make a Terra Cotta Clay Flowerpot Candle Holder

1. Wipe the clay pot and saucer clean with a damp cloth. On the inside of the flowerpot, you only need to clean the rim on the inside to make a candle holder. Allow the terra cotta to dry before you proceed to step 2.

2. Paint the outside of the flowerpot the color(s) of your choice, but don't paint the bottom to make a candle holder. Paint only the rim on the inside. Set the flowerpot aside to dry completely.

3. Paint the terra cotta clay saucer so it matches the flowerpot. Again, leave the bottom unpainted. Set the saucer aside to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

4. Turn the saucer upside down. Use the hot glue gun to glue it to the bottom of the flowerpot to make a candle holder. Allow the glue to cool down before you proceed.

5. Turn the terra cotta flowerpot so it's set up as the candle holder. Glue the wooden cut outs around the body of the terra cotta flowerpot.

6. Set a pillar candle on top of the saucer and your candle holder is ready to use.

Note: The green colored flowerpot candle holder decorated with the star cut outs pictured is just an example. You can use your imagination and your creativity to decorate your candle holder any way you wish.
