Craft Ideas Using Wine Bottles

Using wine bottles for crafts is a great idea simply because many are very colorful and attractive, displaying unique shapes that can be combined with crafting skills to make wonderfully decorative items. Added to these positive features of making crafts from wine bottles is the fact that they are discarded by the hundreds by local restaurants, bars and party centers and are usually free for the asking to a frugal crafter. The basic tools for utilizing craft ideas using wine bottles are an inexpensive glass cutter, a small amount of fine sandpaper, a power drill with a sharp bit and a good pair of work gloves to prevent cuts and glass splinters from entering the skin of the crafter.

A very good craft idea for using wine bottles is to make a lamp of a colorful wine bottle that is a gallon in size. The first step is to remove the wine bottle label which can be accomplished by simply soaking the wine bottle overnight in water, and then peeling away the label the next morning. Purchase a small light socket with an electrical cord attached at you local home improvement store, and see if the fixture fits into the mouth of the wine bottle. If the fixture fits loosely the base of the socket can be made large to fit snugly by wrapping it a few times with electrical tape. If the light socket is larger than the mouth of the bottle the bottle can be cut with a glass cutter to a size that will match the socket. Next, drill a hole on the side of the wine bottle near the base, put the electrical cord through the hole and attach the socket in the wine bottle mouth. All that is needed is a light bulb and a lamp shade and your wine bottle lamp is complete and ready for use.

Another excellent craft idea for using wine bottles are to decorate then and turn them into decanters. Wine bottles can be painted using acrylic paints, wrapped in cord with beads attached or etched using a Dremel tool. When completed the wine bottles can be filled with potpourri, liquid soap or liquids used in the kitchen such as vinegar or cooking oil.

A final word on craft ideas using wine bottles - always be especially careful when cutting glass. Take the few seconds necessary to ensure your personal safety by wearing goggles and gloves, and although they may have a strong desire to participate children should never be allowed to cut glass.
