These simple craft projects will teach you how to make wonderful home decor items using felt. Not only is felt an easy material to work with, it is also inexpensive and available in a wide variety of colors. Choose your felt in various colors to create whimsical items or choose your colors to coordinate with your home decor.

This first craft project will teach you how to make a charming table runner, using felt.

Materials: Tape measure, chalk, 1 yard of felt fabric (any color), coordinating pieces of felt for embellishments, stencils (your choice), pencil, scissors, straight pins, fusible web, iron and ironing board.

Directions: Begin by laying out the yard of felt fabric onto a flat work surface. Use the tape measure and chalk to mark the desired size of your table runner. Cut the felt to those dimensions. Set the base of your table runner aside for now.

Now take the coordinating pieces of felt and iron the fusible web to the back sides. Lay the felt with the paper fused web facing up and place the stencil on top, use the pencil to outline the shape. Remove the stencil and cut out the design. Continue making all of your designs in this manner.

Once you have all of your design appliques complete, place them on top of the base table runner that was set aside earlier. Position them into a pattern that you find pleasing and insert a straight pin into each one to hold them in place. Now remove one design at a time and peel the paper from the back, reposition the applique and use the iron to fuse it into place. Continue this technique until all of the designs have been added. Your table runner is complete and ready to enhance your home decor.

Hints: The above techniques can also be used to make felt place mats. Simply cut out the shapes for your place mats and create the appliques as above.

This next craft project will teach you how to design a felt slipcover for a cube shaped ottoman. This is a great option for sprucing up an out dated ottoman or changing colors to match your home decor.

Materials: Cube shaped ottoman, tape measure, chalk, enough heavy weight felt to cover 5 sides of the ottoman, scissors, straight pins, yarn (matching or contrasting - your choice) and a tapestry needle.

Directions: Begin my measuring the top and all 4 sides of the ottoman, documenting the measurements of each side. Now cut out each piece of felt for each side using these measurements.

Next, lay the top section of felt on the top of the ottoman and pin the felt to the ottoman along one of the edges. Now at the opposite edge of the pinned felt, attach a side panel with the needle and yarn, using an overcast stitch. Now pin another edge of the top piece to the ottoman and add another side, using the same technique as before. Continue these same procedure to attach all four sides to the top.

Now attach each of the sides together working one section at a time, sewing from the top of the ottoman and stitching your way towards the bottom. Make sure the bottom is nice and even, if not give it a slight trim. Your re-designed ottoman is ready for use or to accent your home decor anyway you choose.

Tips: You can choose to cover your ottoman in a variety of colors to create a fun and whimsical seat for a child's room or cover your ottoman with one or two shades to make a modern statement anywhere in the home.

I hope you enjoy these easy craft projects and have discovered how you can make adorable home decor accessories with felt!
