Craft a School Locker Mirror with Plastic Canvas

Melanie L. Marten
Kids and teens love to dress up their school locker with photos of friends, magazine clippings of their favorite musician or actor and other small things that interest them. One thing that is common on the inside of the school locker door is never so they can fix their face and hair between classes. Instead of putting a plain rectangular mirror inside the locker, consider crafting a school locker mirror with plastic canvas.

Materials Needed for Plastic Canvas Locker Mirror

You will need a plain, flat mirror for this craft project. Make sure it is large enough to see yourself in, but small enough to fit securely inside the locker door. Rigid plastic canvas with relatively large holes is ideal. A large eye yarn needle and your choice of yarns or thick threads will complete the frame of the mirror. A piece of felt fabric and a couple strong magnets will form the backing and allow them never to be taken off the locker door and put back on easily.

Plastic Canvas Locker Mirror Design

The first step in creating this attractive locker never is coming up with a design for the frame. The plastic canvas should be cut in a rectangular or rounded rectangular shape on both the inside and outside edges, that will fit around the locker mirror. Do not make it to send or you won't be able to have much of a design. Use graph paper, or even a piece of scrap paper for less complicated patterns, and draw out a basic geometric design you would like on your mirror frame.

Constructing the Locker Mirror Plastic Canvas Frame

Using whatever types and colors of yarn you like, stitch the entire plant design on both pieces of plastic canvas, front and back. Start at the bottom corner and move the yarn from one hole to the next hole on the upper right hand side of it. This is a standard tapestry stitch and can be used to make the entire design. You can use more decorative stitches if you wish.

With both sides' designs are complete, use a loop stitch over the edge of both pieces to connect to the front to back. This should be done around the outside edge of the plastic canvas frame pieces only. Leave one side open to insert the mirror.

Finishing the Locker Mirror

Once the mirror is slipped inside the plastic canvas and yarn frame, stitch closed the last edge of the frame. Cutout piece of felt or similar fabric slightly smaller than the back of the mirror frame. Use clear drying craft glue to attach securely. Glue a couple of strong magnets to at least the upper corners of the mirror back. More magnets should be added if the mirror is heavy or unusually large. Your locker mirror with a plastic canvas frame is now ready to be taken to school and hung inside your locker.

This doesn't seem fun at all. I'm looking for a fun way to make my locker so much better.
