Craft a Simple Spring Ribbon Garland

Easy Chain Link Floral Ribbon Garland

Cyndee Kromminga
Ribbon is most commonly used for bows and ties in craft projects, but the possibilities can be so much more. This project was inspired by the red and green construction paper chains I crafted as a child for Christmas. It is a fun spring decoration to drape over your windows, hutches or as a party decoration. I pulled out my supply of ribbons and chose five complimentary shades and designs. I used floral ribbon that ranged in size from 1-inch to 1 1/2-inches wide. This ribbon is stiffer than craft or fabric ribbon, which will allow the chain links to keep their ring shape.

The finished spring ribbon garland is 9-feet long and has simple ribbon flowers evenly spaced and attached along it's length. The entire garland is assembled using hot glue and can be finished in less than an hour. Experiment with other ribbon colors for different holidays and seasons.

Things Needed:

1-inch to 1 1/2-inch wide floral ribbon in five different colors, 2 1/4-yards each
Ruler
Scissors
Hot glue
1-inch wide floral ribbon, 4-yards
Flat buttons, nine

Step 1
Measure and cut (10) 8-inch lengths from each of the five ribbon choices, for a total of 50 pieces.

Step 2
Apply a dot of hot glue to one end of a ribbon, on the right side. Bring the other end around, with the right side on the outside of the ring and overlap the ends a 1/2-inch.

Step 3
Choose a different color ribbon and insert it through the first ring. Attach the ends with hot glue. Repeat with the remaining three colors of ribbon. You now have one of each of the five colors attached. Continue to add the rest of the ribbons in the same way, following the same pattern as the first five.

Step 4
Measure and cut (18) 8-inch lengths from 1-inch wide ribbon.

Step 5
Repeat step 2, with two pieces of ribbon, making two rings. Apply hot glue, inside one ring, at the seam. Pinch the ring together, connecting the opposite side of the ring with the seam. Note: The glued seam should be centered, with same-size loops on each side of the glued center. Repeat with the other ring. Apply hot glue over the seam side of one pinched ring. Place the other pinched ring on top and cross-wise, creating a plus sign. Repeat with the remaining 16 ribbons, for a total of nine flowers.

Step 6
Choose nine flat buttons from your button box collection. Hot glue one button in the center and on one side of each flower.

Step 7
Apply hot glue to the back of one flower. Place the flower over the outside seam of the fifth chain link on the garland. Repeat with one flower on every fifth ring on the garland.
