Now that knitting has become trendy, many stores are catering to this growing niche by carrying of-the-moment yarns, ribbons and other crafting supplies, and San Diego has some unique treasures of its own in the way of stores. So, plan out a day-long trip in this coastal climate with a few tips on some stores you may want to visit.

The Shepherdess on Juan Street in the city's Old Town section has a good selection of yarns, Parking is easy to find (in the back of the store) and there is usually a space open. However, go early as it tends to get busy and if you are forced to park in one of the Old Town public parking lots, be prepared for crowds beginning noon on weekends. Though the shop is small, they carry a variety of novelty items along with knitting supplies, cool kits and a great selection of books and other how-to guides.

On the opposite end of the store, is a wide selection of beeds ranging from seed beads, to Swarovski crystals and vintage finds. There are also beading magazines and books available for sale. If you live in the area, the store also offers classes.

Just a few doors down from The Shepherdess is Lost Cities, which is mainly for people into beading. An entire wall is dedicated to a variety of beads arranged by color. The retailer also carries chains and other beading supplies along with books. They have a good selection of crystals and gemstones along with charms as well.

Prices for the two stores are relatively high compared to what you would find at a chain craft store. However, you have to remember that what you are buying cannot be found at any old chain store. So, you're getting what you pay for. Lost Cities does offer a discount if you order items in bulk.

If you are interested in taking a break after visiting these two stores, you can head to Old Town where there are a number of restaurants to choose from. El Fandango serves up great Mexican food at moderate prices. Make sure to sit out on the patio for the best experience.

Once you have recharged your batteries, drive down to The Grove, which houses a variety of odds and ends but is tailored to the crafter. The store is located in North Park at 30th and Juniper. Parking is on the street and relatively easy to find even on a busy weekend day.

The Grove carries yarns, house decor and finished jewelry. It has a really cool vibe that is a cross between a book store, coffee shop and craft store. You can find all sorts of little collectibles that would make good gifts. The book selection ranges from regular literature to how-to crafting books. Overall, the inventory is trendy and novel meaning it's not the typical outdated sort of crafting resource that some people would immediately think of.

The store also has a great selection of ribbons in solid colors and prints. There are also cards and vintage buttons to look through. All-in-all, the Grove has a very eclectic mix of finds that makes the trip to the store worthwhile.
