Crafts to Celebrate National Caramel Apple Day

Darlene Michaud
If you thought October 31st was devoted entirely to Halloween, think again! In the U.S, October 31st is also National Caramel Apple Day! Below are some fun apple themed crafts to help you celebrate this American food holiday. And since these are apple crafts, they also make great little gifts to give to teachers!

Apple Core Magnet (see photo here)

This apple core magnet is just the perfect magnet to hold your grocery list on the refrigerator. To make an apple core magnet, you will need the following supplies: red craft foam for the apple, white craft foam for the core, green craft foam for the leaves, a brown chenille pipe cleaner for the stem, a brown marker, white craft glue, a small magnet, a hot glue gun and scissors.

Print this template and trace the apple core image (ignore the other apples) onto white foam and cut out. Then cut just the red parts of the apple and glue them to the white foam. Cut the leaves from green foam and glue them behind the apple so they are just sticking out a bit. Glue a short piece of pipe cleaner behind the apple for the stem. Hot glue a small magnet to the back of the apple.

Clay Pot Apple (see photo here)

A clay pot apple is a cute little pot that you can keep in your kitchen to hold spare change, postage stamps, store receipts or whatever little objects you need to tuck away for safe keeping. To make a clay pot apple, you will need a 3 inch terra cotta pot and the saucer, red paint, a small wooden spool or something else to make the stem, green craft foam, and glue.

Paint the pot and saucer red and let dry. Then paint a face on the pot, using the photo above for placement. Turn the saucer upside down and place it as a lid on top of the clay pot apple. Glue the wooden spool on to the saucer to look like a stem. Cut two leaves from green craft foam and glue to the stem. Your clay pot apple is done!

Apple Print Bags (see photo here)

Use apples as stamps to make apple prints on all kinds of bags. A fun craft you could do is cut lunch bags so they are only about 5 inches tall, stamp an apple print on both sides of each bag, then use the bags to hold treat for your trick or treaters!

To make apple print bags, you will need apples, paper towels, ink pads in the color of your choice, and your bags. Start by cutting each apple in half. You will need one half apple for each color you are going to use for your prints. Lay each apple with the cut side down onto several layers of paper towels. Let the apples sit on the paper towels for at least an hour so most of the moisture is drained from the apple.

Coat your apple with ink from the ink pad and press your image on the bags. You can also use fabric paint if you are designing cloth bags.
