Crafts: Collecting Civil War Bullets

Hobbies that involve our past can be quite fascinating, especially if you enjoy learning more about history. One of the more interesting hobbies involves collecting weapons of the civil war, civil war bullets in particular. Many who experiment with this hobby find it amazing to learn how many different types of bullets were actually used during the civil war. Collecting civil war memorabilia can be quite time consuming, but in the end it can be quite rewarding.

There are a variety of civil war artifacts that one can collect, ranging from civil war pistols, civil war guns, or just civil war weaponry in general. I have an interest in civil war cannons, however those tend to be a bit more difficult to collect, for obvious reasons. If you are interested in civil war memorabilia, bullet collecting is a great place to start.

During the time of the civil war there were quite a few different types of bullets being created. This most likely attributes to the fact that there were numerous changes being made to the types of ammunition that was being created at the time. Although there were round musket balls used, the most common of type of civil war bullet found would be the .58 caliber with three rings around it's base. It can sometimes be difficult to find one of these bullets in perfect shape, but they certainly do exist.

Someone who is a beginner at collecting items such as civil war memorabilia will find it extremely helpful to use a price guide. You can either obtain price guide information online, or by simply visiting your favorite bookstore. In some cases you might find it easy to find a decent price guide through online internet auctions, or through used book stores. Reading through these guides will help you begin to learn about the important things to look for when collecting civil war bullets.

You may also want to read up on basic metal object collecting if you have never collected this type of material before. Gathering tips and techniques will help you build your collection. The easiest way to obtain civil war bullets would be to buy them from other collectors. Although this method is simple, it doesn't quite give the complete satisfaction as finding the items yourself.

To find civil war bullets on your own, it's best to obtain a metal detector. Once you have a metal detector and understand how to use it, head over to the battlefields and begin your search. You'll have to dig deep in some cases to find the items you are looking for, and you'll most likely recover other civil war memorabilia like uniform buttons, buckles, etc. This isn't exactly a bad thing, because before you know it you'll be building a separate collection of civil war artifacts while you are on the search for bullets.

Keep in mind that most battlefields are off limits, but there are many areas that you'll be able to search through. The most likely place that you can find civil war memorabilia is old home sites. Always remember to obtain permission to search the land before you head out on the property. It's always best to remain respectful of the area and not trespass on private property.

Hobbies like collecting civil war bullets will offer a glimpse into history. Not only will you find historical artifacts, but you may be able to learn a bit about our history. The facts of history can be quite sobering, but learning of our past can be just as rewarding as finding your first collectible item.
