Crafts with Your Kids: Photo Storage Box for Mother's Day

Ann Siper
Looking for a fun and functional mother's day craft for the kids? Let them use their creative skills to make Mom a photo storage box!

Ok, so this project can easily be a jewelry box as well or even jut a keepsake box, but every mother I know has tons of photos and could always use a way to store them.

Have the kids take some photos of their face or someone else's face. Any subject in the photo would be fine though, but if you do images of Mom herself or images of anything that remains you of Mom.

They should print out the photo on some heavy white paper, but not on any glossy photo paper. While they can use glossy photo paper if they want, there easy no need to waste that expensive paper when something less expensive will do. Print the picture out to fit the top of your wooden photo box.

I find great photo holding boxes at Michael's all the time. They remind me of drawers in a card catalogue at the library. They usually have a little slot in the front that holds a label. You can choose any size box that fits your Mom's photo collection though.

You can also use plastic photo storage boxes to save money. I find them at the Dollar store all the time. They don't often have the slot in the front for a label, but when you have finished this Mother's Day craft project and let it dry, you could use markers, acrylic paint pens, and even puff paint to label the photo storage boxes.

Now, cut the picture out, be sure to leave a small white boarder of paper. Now, take some watercolor and gently paint in some accent areas on the photo.

For instance, if you took a photo of Mom for Mother's Day you could paint in the eyes with her eye color. You could also paint in lips.

Now, paint on some decoupage on the lid to the photo box. Lay the printed digital photo out on the decoupage. Smooth any wrinkle out with your hands. Now, paint on another protective layer of decoupage.

Let this dry and you are finished! Now, you can use multiple small photographs printed form you digital camera for this Mother's Day craft project. You could even make your photo storage box look like a suitcase that has stickers all over it. This decoupage would work well on the inside of the box as well.

Take this fun homemade mother's day gift idea one step further and organize Mom's photos for her! Now there is a Mother's Day gift she will love!
