Crafts for Kindergarteners: Making a Rabbit Mask

Fiona Johnson
Crafts are a wonderful learning experience for children. Crafts can encourage self expression, improve skills, and keep little hands busy for a while. This craft will focus on making a rabbit or bunny mask. This craft comes in handy especially at Easter time but can also be used when learning about animals or just as an easy craft project.

This craft is recommended for ages five and up with supervision, but can easily be done at a younger age with the assistance of a grown up. Feel free to be flexible with supplies, try different kinds of materials to see what works best for you and your child.

These are the supplies you will need to make a rabbit mask:

Two white or cream colored paper plates, the cheap kind work the best

Safety scissors (or regular scissors if a grown up will be doing the cutting)

Two pieces of pink construction paper

Glue (glue sticks are easiest)

Tape or stapler

Your imagination

Optional- crayons or other decorating supplies and a piece of yarn or elastic

The first thing your child and you will do is cut out a circular piece of pink construction paper the same size as the inside circle of a paper plate. You can choose to color in the inside cirlce of the paper plate instead if you like. You then want to glue the pink circle you cut out to the center of one paper plate.

Set the first paper plate aside to allow the glue to dry for a few minutes and grab the second paper plate. Carefully cut out a triangular piece of the paper plate (image A) and throw the piece you cut out away. This will be the rabbit's face.

Now with the cut piece facing down cut two circles in the plate for eyes (image B). Grab your other piece of pink construction paper and cut 6 even small strips for the whiskers and a small circle for the nose. Glue all of them on.

While the glue on the second paper plate is drying, take your first paper plate and cut it in half. These will be the ears of the rabbit. Add any decorations to the ears that you wish at this time.

After the second paper plate has dried, glue, tape, or staple the ears onto the first paper plate with the flat edges facing inward. If you are going to use a piece of yarn or elastic to keep the mask on the child's face, cut two small holes on each side of the mask. Cut a piece of yarn or elastic about 12 inches long and loop one end through each hole and tie a knot. If you are using yarn you may want to cut two pieces, each 6 inches long so that you can tie the yarn after the child puts the mask up to their face (so there is no slack).

Now decorate the mask in any other way you desire and you now have a rabbit/bunny mask (image C)!

Please note: This craft requires the supervision of a grownup. Children should not be allowed to handle scissors or other sharp objects alone.
