Craigslist Flagging System is the Creation of Morons

Jillita Horton
I know I am not the only writer who is sick to death of getting excited about a listing for a writing gig, only to click on it and see that it's a "flagged" Craigslist ad.

First of all, if any AC CP's are guilty of flagging any CL ads for writing, editing or proofreading gigs, you have a lot of nerve. If any non-CP's who are just visiting this site, are guilty of flagging, equal shame to you as well. And to anyone else who thinks they are Lord over others and decides to flag an ad, what gives you the right?

Who are YOU to decide an ad should be flagged? On a writer's site, I bought up this topic and someone actually posted that she flags ads calling for people to re-write college papers. How dare she? This is a legitimate writing gig. There ARE people who will take on these low-paying gigs.

Why do writing gig ads get flagged in the first place? What are they really -- ads recruiting people to pose for a porn site? How "inappropriate" or "abusive" can an ad for editorial help be? The listings that I click on seem extremely legitimate.

And if it turns out that they pay only pennies, or don't pay at all, or want me to do all sorts of other things unrelated to editorial, then I can simply terminate contact with them. What could be easier in life?

Nobody has the right to think for me. Nobody has the right to think they are the final word and final judge and take it upon their high-and-almighty selves to flag an ad. Like I said, you have a lot of nerve taking away opportunities for other people. Who made YOU the decision maker? If you think an ad is questionable, then skip it and get on with your self-righteous life. It's none of your business if I come across that questionable ad and waste time with responding to it.

I am also acutely aware that some ads get flagged after a writer responds to it; the writer wants to knock off the competition. To be honest, I can completely understand the logic behind this, even though I would never pull this stunt myself.

But for the life of me, I cannot grasp the logic behind someone taking it upon themselves to decide an ad is worthless or "illegitimate" and extinguishing it by flagging it. Are these people control freaks? What kind of parents do they make? Stay out of MY business, dang it.

And as for Craigslist for coming up with this stupid-as-a-box-of-rocks flagging system, don't CL people realize how flawed this system is? What kind of idiots are behind CL? Hey Craig, why don't you reply to my content here and explain where your marbles were when you came up with the flagging system.

Hasn't it ever dawned on you that people will flag ads just to eliminate their competition? And that people will flag ads simply because they got the wrong impression of them? Hello, Craig? Did your mother drop you on your head when you were 2 years old or what?

This has got to be one of the dumbest systems out there, giving the common person the power to eliminate perfectly good ads. As a result, I'm out many writing gigs, thanks to these selfish people who think they are better judges than anyone else.

PS: I've tried contacting CL about this several times, and nobody responded. They do not have a direct e-mail address, only one of those stupid e-mail forms to fill out. I tried again and finally got what appeared to be an impersonal response that didn't even answer my questions about the flagging system. Spread the word: CL is run by morons.

F*** CL and their puppets! I had a personals ad on there, followed their "guidelines" and got 4 replies to my ad. Then I began to realize after a few days later, that those were the only responses that I got, nobody else was responding. Well, I didn't sweat it, but then a week later (which was yesterday that made it a week), they send me an email telling me that I was flagged? #$%$ and why? So I pretty much said the hell with it, whoever had been flagging me was apparently jealous of me and a total hater. So don't waste your time on CL-there's plenty of haters on there that don't have a life and mad because you're trying something to improve your life. Once again, f*** CL and their puppets! Never again will I deal with them for anything!

sounds like a few people craigslist didnt need anyway. Flagging works 100%. If you are this upset about the way craigslist runs its site... wait for it... dont use the site. Make your own website and then you can post whatever you want to on it.

Same going on in Erie, Pa. Rant and Rave posts are flagged in minutes. Can not post anything about politics, flagging, and a lot of other stuff. Raves are constantly flagged. Now I believe that I am being personally attacked as I can not post or reply to posts even in other cities. Only my answers are flagged, not the whole posts. An example is someone asked why their computer was getting unwanted pop-ups even though they had their pop-up blocker on. My reply was "you may have a virus". FLAGGED. CL's flagging system is definitely flawed.

Flagging should not be allowed. Period. Websites are to be blamed for.

One other thing that I should mention is that Ebay and Craigslist are still suing each other, and the only advantage that craigslist has is public opinion. If they keep allowing these kinds of activities they are going to remove any advantage that they still have. Also keep in mind that Ebay is a company with no morals at all. They constantly are removing ads and closing people's accounts, with no reason at all. If they even think that you are doing something wrong they shut down the ad. So fighting a company like that is not going to be easy. Ebay has already had thousands of suits against it, but Ebay always wins. They also bought part of carigslist, learned how they do it, and then started their own service. Ebay is too big and if craingslist stands any chance of winning they need to fix this. And personally I feel that Ebay will win, regardless of who is right or wrong. Money is power, and if you have money and are ruthless you will always win, unless it gets too much media attenti

Yea, I own a company too, with branches all over the US, and my competitors are flagging my ads everywhere the ad has no charge. I guess that if you pay they have a harder time of removing your ad, because they would have to prove that you are doing something in violation of their rules, or give the money back. Anyway, I just thought of a good idea for getting craigslist's attention to what competition or some times just kids are doing. Take your cellphone and drive around hooking up with various wifi signals, and flag as many ads as you can. If they see that too many ads are getting flagged, they will be forced to come up with a better method.

Hi.. yes, I heard that competitors are flagging other posts. I guess the moderators of craigslist don't care. My ads always get flagged off and I know the same people do it because they send me nasty emails saying "Fuck off" "You're a bitch" I'd like to find another website like craiglist. I hope it will come soon. It's been a nightmare.

    @Flagger4reason:

I don't understand the flagging approach myself, and do not appreciate comments that attack the writer rather than respond in a professional manner.

  • babe 3/9/2009

Yep, me too I think that the flaggers are a bunch of kids that should be in school.

Same thing for the flag help forum, a bunch of manner-less abusive bafoons.

    So I went here http://neverflagged.com

I am happy now, can post in a minute and no flagging.

Did a maladjusted teenager write this article?

It takes but a moment of mental effort understand why flagging is necessary, because Craiglist would be of no value otherwise.
