Craigslist Personal Ad Ends Career

Congressman Destroys Career Over Craigslist Personal Ad

Marcia Robinson
Republican Congressman Christopher Lee, of the 26th District of New York, ended his career in congress less than three hours after Gawker.com showed him shirtless as he emailed photos in response to Craigslist personal ads. Lee represented himself to the woman he met through a Craigslist personal ad as a divorced, 39 year old Washington lobbyist. On the contrary Lee is a 46 year-old married father who apologized in his resignation letter saying he was sorry for any harm he had caused his family, staff and constituents.

The 34 year old woman, who had placed the Craigslist personal ad, shared Christopher Lee's emails with Gawker.com, after she realized that Lee had misrepresented himself. How did she know she was communicating with Congressman Christopher Lee? Because Congressman Lee was using his real name and his actual email address. It wasn't hard to find the truth.

This is just one more story showing that whether or not you are using a Craigslist personal ad, online behavior can be detrimental to career success. If you are already employed, you could be fired or forced to resign over online behavior like Congressman Lee's. If you are conducting a job search now, you should know that employers may be using your online behavior to screen you as a candidate.

Here are some of the major concerns hiring managers noted as they checked up on candidates online: (Source is a CareerBuilder.com survey)

41% - posted information about them drinking or using drugs
40% - posted provocative or inappropriate photographs or information
29% - had poor communication skills
28% - bad-mouthed their previous company or fellow employee
27% - lied about qualifications
22% - used discriminatory remarks related to race, gender, religion, etc.
22% - screen name was unprofessional
21% - was linked to criminal behavior
19% - shared confidential information from previous employers
