Craigslist Removes Adult Services Section

Has Craigslist Lost the Battle Over "Sex for Sale"?

Lynda Altman
It appears that Craigslist is loosing the battle to keep the adult services section up and running. When you go to a U.S. based Craigslist site, there is a black bar with the word "CENSORED" in it where the adult services used to be. Does this mean that Craigslist is free from adult services advertisements? No--a look through the Fayetteville, Arkansas, Craigslist shows that adult services are still available; although indirectly.

Craigslist's Problems

Craigslist in recent months has come under fire for promoting or at least allowing ads for prostitution and child porn to be displayed on their websites. In many communities, local police have used Craigslist to locate and bring down prostitution rings.

Whether or not Craigslist is actually promoting prostitution, police from every state in the U.S. are using Craigslist to catch individuals and groups participating in illegal activities. Should Craigslist remove the adult services section? It depends on who you ask. Some groups feel that adult services cause no harm and others feel that they are the undoing of society at large.

Internet Modeling

No sooner than the censored bar went up, the adult services community found another way to promote their activities. Internet modeling seems to be the answer to the "CENSORED" issue. A quick check under employment opportunities, etc. section has an ad looking for internet models. Clicking on the link in the ad brings one to the website of Internet Modeling.

Internet Modeling's page offers a brief description of their services and pay-rate. They specifically state all models must be 18 years of age or older. It further states that models may not use any verbiage that gives the impression that they are under the age of 18 or that they are teenagers.

What do internet models do? They offer live "chats" via webcam. Sounds pretty adult oriented to me. Legal? It depends where you live.

Is this the end of Craigslist's adult services? No official announcement has come from Craigslist. For now, all of Craigslist's U.S. sites have removed access to the adult services. International Craigslist sites still have the option available.
