Cranberries' No Need to Argue is a Sign of the '90s and Beyond

Zombie, Yeat's Grave, Empty and Dreaming My Dreams and More Great Songs

Sheri Fresonke Harper
The Cranberries' "No Need to Argue" album is my favorite of their work. With daffodils popping up around my yard I couldn't help but think of this in terms of the nineties and their song "Daffodil's Lament" sung by singer Dolores O'Riordan in her beautiful and strong voice and accompanied by the entire Cranberries band. Even though it's a sad song about leaving a relationship, it's also very affirmative in looking at the bright side and moving on with life.

The song by the same name of the Cranberries album, "No Need to Argue", has personal appeal because my current husband played it many times during his divorce. It is a statement of defeat, of how words fail to change people who are set in their ways. One of my favorite things about music and poetry is the way it can touch something inside every person who shares a given emotion or thought.

The nineties though, were a decade when many Celtic music artists came into popularity and the Cranberries were among them. One of the hallmarks of these artists were their use of classical poetry and references to classics. And like the others, "Yeat's Grave" has the Cranberries revisiting this grave.

The Cranberries "No Need to Argue" album also contains the popular lament against war and terrorism "Zombie", something perhaps we can all relate to in thinking about war. We get numb. And that same numbness is what allows awful deaths to occur.

In my favorite song, "Dreaming My Dreams," you get a much sweeter hope, one of love and the future and it is sweetly sung. The progression of songs from sad break up of a relation to pain and anguish about life to a happier outlook and steadiness is well done on this album by the Cranberries.

I love this group, and my favorite songs are Linger and Dreams. Their thick Irish accents are awesome!
