Crayon Physics Deluxe Independant Game Review

Matt Remley
2009 brought many things; one was the January 7th release of Crayon Physics Deluxe by Kloonigames. The game itself has transformed from a little known independent game into the winner of a grand prize award at the Independent Games Festival.

Players whom have come accustomed to games having intense storylines, and Hollywood style characters won't find that with Crayon Physics Deluxe. This game may be all about having fun, but is it worth the $19.95 price tag?

Game Play

When it comes to game play, Crayon Physics Deluxe keeps it short and sweet. The game explores a fairly new genre of gaming genres known as physics puzzles. In addition to that, Crayon Physics Deluxe is kept in 2D, and the objective is to draw.

Problem is, drawing isn't the only thing players will be doing. The objective is to draw shapes and objects in order to make pathways for a ball to make its way to the star symbol in each level. The ball is set in every level differently, and only has to touch the star symbol to win.

Everyone knows that whatever goes up must come down, a saying that players should know when playing this game. At times Crayon Physics Deluxe can get difficult, on certain levels the ball moves on its own right away when normally the player has to force the ball to move.

One of the most interesting things about this game is the fact that if a player draws certain shapes, like a circle, it actually has weight to it. Drawn objects having weight means that players can build catapults, hammers, and similar objects to get the ball in the right direction.

Graphics

Crayon Physics Deluxe may have some of the best game play independent games have seen in years, but the graphics are fairly simple and straightforward. Two-dimensional graphics with everything drawn in crayon effects may not seem interesting when placed in a game, but it works for this one.

Sound

In terms of sound effects, Crayon Physics Deluxe isn't very innovative. Fairly annoying music tracks litter most of the game, and can't be replaced or changed. Thank goodness the options menu allows players to turn the music all the way down.

Creativity & Innovation

Upon playing this game, one should be impressed with how innovative Crayon Physics Deluxe really is. If the game play wasn't enough, the addition of a level editor knocks this out of the ballpark. Players are able to build levels and even share them with friends.

So is Crayon Physics Deluxe worth the $19.95 price tag? Sure is, gamers should take note and at least try out this game since it's one of the most innovative in awhile. The graphics and sound effects may not be for everyone, but the game play makes it well worth the money.

Crayon physics? This is a game? This sounds like something out of a Crayola coloring book by the title.

Sounds interesting. My husband really likes puzzle games and anything that makes him think. I prefer hack and slash mindless time killers usually. My son may even like this one, if it is not too advanced for him. Thanks for the review!
