Crazy Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom

A Thirty-Something Stay-At-Home Mom Reveals Her Secrets

Rachel Carpenter (joyful327)
Curious what happens in the life of a stay-at-home mom? Are you thinking about becoming a stay at home mom? Just want to know some of the secrets and confessions of a stay at home mom? Stay-at-home moms aren't perfect, and I am one of them.

I chose to become a stay-at-home mom literally the day I became pregnant with my son. I quit my job right away, probably not the best choice, but I just wanted to begin my adventures as a stay at home mom immediately. I have had this job now for over five years. That is longer than any other job I've had. Here are a few random confessions about my life as a stay at home mom.

My son associates breastfeeding with the computer.

Yes, I spend a lot of time on the internet. So, much, indeed, that I always breastfeed my son while at the computer. He associates the computer with nursing. Now, he is also over two years old. So, that is another confession of itself: I am still nursing my two year old.

So, I confess that I spend way too much time online as a stay at home mom. I could be cleaning my air vents, making recipes from scratch or sorting through my laundry instead. But, no, I've been sucked into the addiction of the internet. I believe that many stay-at-home moms secretly spend way too much time online. If you visit any online forum for moms (such as the message boards listed here) you'll see lots of moms spend time online.

My kids have stayed in their pj's all day.

I confess that I have allowed my children to stay in their pajamas all day. I will say I don't like it, it is a little displeasing to see my four year old running around in footsies at 1 pm, but I have (embarrassingly) allowed it. Sometimes I will schedule things purposely in the morning so I know that I will be forced to get them into their clothes by 9 am or so.

It would be humiliating if my house caught on fire, and I was out their on the side of the road with my kids still in their pj's. Of course, that would probably be the least of my worries.

I get lonely sometimes.

I get very lonely at times as a stay at home mom. Fortunately, I have found ways to interact with other moms so I do feel like a part of society. I think this loneliness is fairly common. I even wrote an article suggesting ways to overcome loneliness as a stay at home mom. Click on "How to Cope with Loneliness as a Stay at Home Mom" for my ideas.

My house would be cleaner if I was a working mom.

My house can get dirty. If I was working, it would stay clean since we wouldn't roam around in it all day long. It can get very cluttered and messy at times. I don't like it at all. But, one mom of grown kids once told me, "If your house was clean, that would mean your kids aren't having any fun." I agree with her.

I have taken my kids for a drive just to get out of the house.

I go crazy sometimes staying at home all day. I have enrolled my children in random classes and activities solely so we can get out of the house. And, some times, I have even gone for a drive just to get out. My kids don't seem to mind. It's worth every penny that it costs in gas.

These are just a few confessions I have as a stay at home mom. Being a stay at home mom is not an easy job, but I love it. Even though we may not have as much income as we'd have if I was working, it's worth it. If, by chance, you are reading this article and want to be a stay at home mom, but aren't sure if you can afford it, please read, "How to Afford to Be a Stay at Home Mom." I do understand that not all moms can afford to stay home.

I am also a SAHM and you are right on the money with this article! The messy house and wanting to get out of the house are right in line with how I feel. But I wouldn't trade it for the world. My relationship with my kids as well as their head start in learning are above and beyond most important.

    Rachel,

Thanks for the great read! It was nice to see that someone else just "knew they wanted to stay at home the minute they became pregnant. (Same story here)! I am now spending the last 5 months of my pregnancy addicted to the internet and trying out this associated content! Hope to see more articles about stay at home life! =)
