Crazy Movie Memorabilia from Crazy Movies

My Taste in Movies is Odd, as is the Stuff I Collect from Them!

Oakley J. Clark
I am a movie junkie. I try to get to the movies three or four times a week, have been a Netflix subscriber for years and have a gargantuan DVD collection. So I know a good movie when I see one. I rarely enjoy the cookie cutter dribble that comes out these days so it's no surprise that some of my favorite movies are older flicks that have cult followings.

My favorite movies are 1. "The Jerk", 2. "The Big Lebowski", 3. "Point Break", 4. "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", and 5. "Dumb and Dumber".

I've tried over the years to gather as much memorabilia as I can from these movies. I can't get enough of Steve Martin in "The Jerk" or Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in "Point Break." These are some amazing performances (for entirely different reasons) so I have tried to honor them as much as I can.

I was at a garage sale a few years ago in Southern California and stumbled across this publicity print of Swayze and Reeves from the penultimate scene in "Point Break" when Bodhi is about to paddle out to his death. It was old and tattered, but it was an original shot from when the movie first came out so I knew that it was special. I keep it next to the original magazine ad for "Fast Times" that I stumbled across reading one of my dad's old surf magazines from the early 80's. Both of these items are nearly impossible to find these days so I keep them dear to my heart.

There was no shortage of hilarious "Dumb and Dumber" memorabilia when it debuted back in 1994 so I have done my best to track it down as best I can. I even tried to find the scooter that they rode in the movie (what it's not in the Smithsonian?) but had to settle for a generic knockoff that still does the trick. One of my prized "Dumb and Dumber" possessions is a pair of goggles that was supposedly worn by Jim Carrey in the movie (thank you eBay!) I have yet to get them authenticated, but I can just fill the hilarity emanating from them so I feel like they are legit. You can check out the picture of me wearing the goggles along with a replica moped helmet I got a few years ago to go as Lloyd Christmas for Halloween. This was one of my favorite costumes ever!

One of my coolest pieces of memorabilia is an original script from "Inglorious Basterds" that I finagled away from my roommate a few years ago. I keep this under pretty tight lock and key as I know he had to go through a lot to get it. I lived in the East Village for a while with an aspiring actor who was obsessed with Quentin Tarantino and he ended up landing an audition with him for something. He managed to weasel his way into some personal files and snagged the script and ran out the door. The rest is history.

I'd like to say my collection is bordering on complete, but with each passing year I find something else I want to add. Pretty soon I am going to need to get a storage unit!
