Crazy Weather in Fort Myers, Fla.

Debi Rideout
The weather has been wacky in Fort Myers, Fla., the past couple days. It looks like that weather might continue too. The thunderstorms in southwest Florida have been pretty brutal. If you are living or visiting this part of the country, be careful right now. You never know when a storm will pop up. Here is what has been happening with the crazy weather in Fort Myers area the last couple days:

March 28, 2011

Living in Florida this time of year is usually the best. It is sunny almost every day, and it is a great vacation spot to be in. I am one of those lucky people that gets to call this special place home. It was around 7:50 a.m. when the sky suddenly got really gray. I was sitting on the couch when suddenly it sounded like the heavens opened up, and rain poured from the sky in a mad fury. This was not a normal storm.

Being Affected

Usually a storm like this does not happen until late spring and early summer. That is when it is rainy season here in Florida so you kind of get used to it. However, this storm came out of nowhere, and my family and I were totally unprepared for it. Thankfully it was a day in my county where there was no school so my kids were safe from it. However, my husband had to leave right in the middle of it to get to work on time. I was pretty worried for his safety.

The Main Storm

The main storm brought heavy thunder and lightning. The rain that came down was blinding. I rushed outside to remind my husband that he had forgotten something before he left, and the wind was so powerful that my front door literally flung out of my hand. The wind came into my house, and it knocked several things off my fireplace mantel. It took all my strength to close the door, and I got totally soaked just from opening it. Then the electricity in my house went off twice. It was pretty bad.

The Aftermath

My front lawn looked like a pond was in it. The water came down so fast that the rain drains could not keep up with it. Thankfully my husband made it to work okay. The sun popped out after a couple hours, and it was once again beautiful in Florida. However, it is now the next day, and the storm clouds are rolling in again. The weather forecast shows that we are supposed to have more thunderstorms today, Thursday, and Friday. Looks like rainy season came early this year for Fort Myers.
