Cream of the Crop - a Poetic Intercession for the Best in His Profession

Linda Ann Nickerson

What do Eric Clapton and coffee have in common?
Neither are any good without Cream!
- M. Sutherland

My dear friend, I must disagree.
The best Slowhand is Mr. C!
My heart, just like a hammer, pounds
To hear this brave Ulysses' sounds.

A distant kin, this bluesman dear
Can run a riff to please the ear.
For decades, dancing on the edge,
A strange brew was his daily pledge.

And yet, his soul has searched for more,
As he has knocked on Heaven's door.
In tears eternal, seeking hope,
This long-lost pilgrim dropped his dope.

The Father's eyes have never left,
Although his soul has been bereft.
Like Mr. Key, the faithful pray
Forever man will find his way.

King Domino, look to the light.
Just don't think twice; you'll be alright.
For mercies, they may fall like rain,
To soothe your soul and ease your pain.

The Lord gives eyesight to the blind,
And in His light, the drifters find
That at the crossroads, life can bloom
As sadness fades in His white room.

Your music great can change the world;
Behind the mask, a gift unfurled.
Once finding freedom, throw it down,
To reach out for a higher crown.

Yes, Heaven is one step away.
And you can join Him there one day
To pluck and strum and rock and sing,
For you'll be riding with the King.

Author's Note:

In the 1960s, fans tagged a London Underground stop with these words: "Clapton is God." The phrase caught on. Yet, Eric Clapton seems to have searched for God his whole life. May he find Him! With his God-given talent, who knows? Perhaps old Slowhand could change the world!

My wife Lynn and I have been fans of Clapton for over 10 years, more than 30 in my case. We were brought together through his music. This poem is an awesome tribute to him. May God be with him.

Wish I could have gotten the rating to go up higher-Although I don't write lyrics like you-I do join you in praying for celebrities who are seeking in all the wrong places-what a peace to them and a benefit to the world if they found the One they are really looking for.

"You got me on my knees, beggin' baby plaese" lol. Nice poem. It's nice to hope that someday "Mr. C." will find God.

That is a great poem, I love Clapton too, even though I don't listen to much music anymore (need to download some tracks for listening to while I write some articles).
