Create a Christmas Poinsettia Craft for Children

Making a Christmas poinsettia is a wonderful snowy afternoon project to complete with your children. Everyone who sees a poinsettia is immediately reminded of the holiday season, and incorporating a few into your holiday décor is sure to brighten up the home. This particular craft only requires a few supplies and a little creativity which makes it appropriate for any child who can safely handle a paintbrush.

Christmas Paper Plate Poinsettia Craft Supplies

Two Paper Plates
Scissors (safety scissors for small ones)
Paint in red, black, green, and a light red, pink, or orange
A bit of green crepe paper
Tape
Stapler
A pen or marker

Steps for Creating a Christmas Paper Plate Poinsettia

1. First you want to take your deep red, or base paint, and paint both of your paper plates entirely red to make the main color of your poinsettia. This will require two separate paintings as one side will have to dry before the other can be painted. After both sides of each plate have completely dried, it is time to move on.

2. The second step is to take your pen, pencil, or marker and your two paper plates and draw a basic flower or poinsettia outline across each of them. The two poinsettia outlines can have as many petals as you choose, but I would recommend five each.

3. When you have the outline drawn, take out your scissors and trim along the lines you have drawn. Do not throw away the pieces that are left over, merely set them aside for now as they can act as patch pieces if an error occurs later.

4. Now is the time to add any accent paint or decoration to your poinsettia. My junior crafter added some splashes of light color (pink) to give the illusion of light and then used a bright green to give the poinsettia a bit of an outline.

5. After the paint and embellishments from step four dry, take your two flowers and stack them. Then twist the top flower until the petals of the bottom flower are visible underneath. By having created two separate sections, the poinsettia will have an illusion of depth a one layer project would not have.

6. Use a staple gun at the center of the flowers to adhere them to one another.

7. Fold up the petals of the poinsettia at odd angels to add further dimension to the project.

8. Take a small piece of green crepe paper (or a similar material) and wrap it to make a flower center and give you poinsettia a final bit of pizzazz!
