Create a Date Checklist

For some months now, the Dates on a Dime column has been working to provide ideas for the romantically challenged. This week we will be discussing the elements necessary for a successful date. Gentlemen, please note what is NOT on the list. Ladies, please remember what he wishes was on the list.

Build Anticipation

A date will be most successful when both parties are looking forward to it. Let your spouse know you are excited to get to spend time with them. Use notes, texts, emails, and voicemails throughout the day to accomplish this. Make sure you make these reminders a priority. Schedule them. Your spouse will know if you allow this step to be an afterthought.

Involve Others

Now, don't take this the wrong way, but your spouse secretly likes it when you bring someone else into your romance. Not all parts of your romance, of course, but some parts. Have a friend deliver the notes, involve the waitress, get the flowers delivered in a very public way, put an ad in the paper (We're always looking for ads, you know!). The point is, your spouse likes it when you're willing to shout your love and commitment to them from the rooftops. Yeah, they might be a little embarrassed, but in a good way.

Remember Who Its About

When you set up the date, it's your responsibility to make the date something your spouse will enjoy. For some reason, my wife hates it when I buy her my favorite brand of fishing lure. Conversely, I'm gonna scream if I get one more pair of ballet shoes. The point is, make the date about them. Sacrifice for them and make sure they know you're happy to do it.

Be Present

One of the main keys to a successful date is the commitment to be there and attentive to your spouse. Tune out the crowd, the game, (the cute waitress), and anything else that pulls your attention away from them. Date time is their time to be appreciated. Keep the focus where it belongs.

Pre-Plan

Your spouse will notice, and appreciate if you take the time to get everything set up. Call ahead. Have a surprise ready for when you get seated. Ask for VIP treatment for your spouse. How cool would it be if the people at the popcorn counter at the movie theater already had her drink, favorite candies, and popcorn ready for her when she walked up? It can be done. All you have to do is get there early and ask.

Don't have Pre-conceived Ideas about Where the Night Should Go

Let your date night progress naturally and see how things go. There's no reason for either of you to feel pressured or stressed. Date nights should be allowed to take on a life of their own. Don't have fun with each other and just relax.
