If Grandma keeps asking when you're going to settle down and tie the knot, but you're not quite ready to bid bachelorhood adieu, we've found a solution: FakeGirlfriend.co.
The new service helps singles convince friends that they're happily coupled by supplying text messages and even phone calls from the imaginary girlfriend.
The process is pretty simple: Text a specific number (saved in your phone under some lovely lady's name), and the service responds with a girlfriend-like text message ("I just need to talk … call me?"), followed by a phone call from the pretend GF, according to MSNBC.com.
The ruse could work for a while, but you'll eventually need some more solid evidence that said girlfriend exists.
Enter: CloudGirlfriend.co, a service launched in March that builds the legend of this pretend lover on Facebook -- after all, everyone knows things aren't real until it's Facebook official.
Much like FakeGirlfriend.co, CloudGirlfriend concocts a dream gal who will send mushy messages to convince onlookers that something steamy is brewing. Only, these messages are not pre-recorded -- real women provide the virtual companionship.
The startup's founders are quick to point out that this isn't another adult chat service but a way for lonely boys to make themselves feel better and learn how to behave in an IRL relationship (that's "in real life" in online speak).
"They can use the site to jumpstart the process of changing social perceptions about themselves," co-founder David Fuhriman said in ABC News article. "This interaction can ... provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."
Indeed, the site's introduction video sells itself as more of a virtual companionship service than a fake relationship site. Users may fill out a profile listing what they're looking for in their leading lady, and should that dream gal show up, the video suggests, they might end up with a date.
As the service's tagline proclaims: The best way to get a girlfriend is to already have one.
