Tip: Recycle an existing flower pot for your own garden or a friend to save on cost. Remove summer flowers that are finishing with specific autumn plants that can withstand colder temperatures.
Fall Porch Flower and Pumpkin Display Shopping List
To recreate the look in the article follow, purchase the plant listed below. If you cannot find a specific plant in your area, feel free to substitute an autumn plant that you like and that will work in your climate. Note that actual plant costs will vary from region to region. These plants do require sun and are not suitable for shade containers.
1 - 6 inch ornamental pepper - $4.99
3 - 4 inch mums in manakin red - $2.99 each
1 - 4 inch viola in sorbet orange delight - $1.49
1 - small orange pumpkin - $1
1 - metal orange pumpkin accent stake - $2.99
Total cost (excluding tax and any extra soil, if needed) = $19.44
How to Create the Fall Porch Flower and Pumpkin Display
1. Reuse an existing garden pot or container.
2. Add extra soil, if needed. Reuse existing soil from your summer flower pots.
3. Plant the colorful ornamental pepper plant in the center of the container.
4. Plant the 3 red mums around the backside of the pepper. Leave a little space between each plant as they will grow to fill in the space throughout the season.
5. Plant the orange viola in front of one red mum and to the front side of the center pepper plant.
6. Place the orange pumpkin as a harvest accent for the entire season in the remaining front space. The pepper should be behind the pumpkin.
7. Add a decorative metal accent, if desired. You could have multiple metal accents to change throughout the season. Replace the harvest pumpkin stake with a Halloween or Thanksgiving stake to keep your porch flower pot looking fresh.
Other Accents to Add to Your Fall Porch Flower and Pumpkin Display
If you have a little more money to invest, consider one or more of these fun ways to embellish your fall porch display.
1. Purchase a mini hay bale and a small decorative scarecrow from your local craft store. Place the mini hay bale at the back of your display. Add the scarecrow to the hay bale. Plant the flowers in front of the hay bale accent.
2. Buy 3 pumpkins or other gourds in varying sizes. Add to the porch display.
3. Carve 1 small pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern. Add a tea light and use the flower porch display as part of your Halloween decorations.
