In the good old days, putting together a fanfiction archive was a challenge. The webmaster for the archive had to go out and search for fanfiction. Then, they had to ask for permission to add the stories to their fanfiction archive, usually by email. Then, they had to format each story individually so that it matched the look and style of the rest of the archive.
Now, putting together a fanfiction archive isn't nearly as difficult. And that's largely thanks to automated archives.
What Is an Automated Archive?
An automated archive is a program designed to make a webmaster's life a lot easier. Automated archives use CGI technology to automatically do a lot of the tedious, time-consuming things archive runners once had to do by hand.
It used to take weeks to start an automated fanfiction archive. Now, it can be done in hours.
To create an automated fanfiction archive, all you have to do is upload the program files to your webhost, just like you would with a blog or website. Then, fanfiction writers can add their own stories to the archive, and the stories are automatically formatted by the program.
There are quite a few automated fanfiction archive programs available, for free, to anyone interested in using them. And one of the best is eFiction.
What is eFiction?
eFiction is a free, automated fanfiction archive program. If you've visited a fanfiction archive lately, chances are it used eFiction software.
There are many great things about eFiction. For one, it's very easy to use. Having some knowledge of HTML or PHP would be helpful but isn't necessary. And anything you need to learn you will learn by using the program.
Another plus of eFiction is that it's constantly being updated. A lot of automated archive programs are no longer in development, so no improvements will be made. And some automated archive programs are so new, you can't really trust that they'll be around for long.
eFiction has been around for years, and is constantly being improved upon.
Another plus in eFiction's favor is the support. With a lot of automated fanfiction archives, support is nonexistent. In fact, they'll tell you upfront that there's little if any support. If you have a problem, you can send an email to the email address provided, and someone might be able to help you. But probably not.
eFiction has a busy forum where the creators of the program, as well as fellow users who are very knowledgeable about the software, are always available to provide help and advice.
eFiction is a great way to start an automated fanfiction archive, and show your love and support for your favorite show.
