Create Foam Marshmallow Snowmen for a Kid's Winter Activity

Lyn McCallister
During winter breaks and snowy afternoons, children often become bored and need a creative outlet. This fun project uses foam marshmallows to create lasting snowmen. Your children can create entire snowman families and scenes all afternoon!

Supplies Needed

Foam marshmallows (Amazon sells a Darice 15 pack) or check your local craft store
Foam or tacky glue
Black marker
Twigs from the yard
Sparkly felt in red, green, black, orange, and white
Scissors
Pen
Optional: glitter, stickers, or other accent pieces

Step-by-Step Instructions to Create Foam Marshmallow Snowmen
1. You may find it helpful to create little hat patterns ahead of time. Draw several different hat shapes on paper and cut them out for each child.

2. Assemble each snowman by using the tacky glue. Vary the snowman heights by using 2, 3 or 4 marshmallows per figure.

3. Allow to dry.

4. Cut a hat for each snowman by tracing the pattern onto sparkly felt using a pen.

5. Glue the hat to the top of each snowman.

6. Optional: create a snowman face by cutting a circle from white sparkly felt. You can draw the face directly onto the marshmallow instead.

7. Create the face by drawing 2 large circles for the eyes and 4 or 5 circles for the mouth.

8. Cut out a small triangle from the orange sparkly felt and glue it to the snowman's face.

9. Draw buttons on the snowman.

10. Break your twigs to an appropriate length and insert them into the marshmallows for arms.

11. Use the black marker to write your child's name and date on the back of the foam snowman.

Design Options for Foam Marshmallow Snowmen
1. You can glue multiple snowmen together, as shown in the article photo, to create a fun holiday scene. Glue the snowmen together before you add the arms.

2. Cut a star from yellow sparkly felt and glue to it to the snowman.

3. Cut a candy cane shape from white sparkly felt and use a red pen to add the stripes. Glue the candy cane to one of the snowman's hands.

4. Buy snowflake buttons and glue them as accent pieces to the snowman's hat.

5. Make a group of snowmen and glue them to a piece of foam board. Take the project to school for show-and-tell.

6. Make a snow marshmallow dog or cat using one foam marshmallow, twigs for legs, and felt for ears and tails.

7. Make a ribbon loop and glue to the top of your snowman. Hang the foam marshmallow snowman on your Christmas tree.
