Materials Needed for the Fairy Wand
1. A 12 to 18 inch dowel
2. Acrylic craft paint
3. A hot glue gun
4. A large silk flower
5. Gathered lace or a fabric ruffle
6. Assorted ribbons or flat lace
Constructing the Fairy Wand
The fairy wand starts with the wooden dowel. First, you must sand it smooth and paint it in your choice of colors. After that is complete, you will be attaching the large silk flower to one end. It is a good idea to cut the silk flower stem as small as possible so that they flower sits flat on the end of the dowel. If you would like, you can also tap a small hole into the end of the dowel with a hammer and nail. The flower stem can be inserted and glued in place. Otherwise, simply glue the flower securely to the end of the dowel.
After the flower is attached and the glue is dry, you should use gathered lace, about one or two inches wide, to encircle the bottom of the silk flower. This will hide the glue and the ugly bottom of the flower or stem. You can also use a fabric ruffle for this.
The last basic step is to use a length of flat lace or a satin ribbon to spiral around the dowel and tie in a bow at either the top of the bottom of the wand. You can leave long ribbons hanging down to float about when your fairy waves her wand.
Special Accents Your Child Might Like
After creating the basic fairy wand, your child might like to make it even more special. They might like to affix silk flowers to the other end, or glue them to the ribbons that dangle down from the bottom. They might also like strings of beads dangling from the top of the wand or wrapped around the handle. Another great idea is to lightly spray the flower and the wand with spray adhesive and shake sparkly glitter onto the whole thing.
