The Classic Knot with a Braid Beneath
Often, women who choose to sustain long hair have a more naturally thick head of hair. When this is the case, the hair can be split into both an upper and lower section to create a fun, braided hairstyle that is visually interesting.
To create a dual bun or knot and braid, separate your hair halfway down the crown (at the point where you would typically pin a ponytail in place). Use the top half of your hair to form a bun or knot. Depending on the look you want to project throughout your day, you can style the knot accordingly. A messy knot is perfect for a windswept summer 'do, while a well-rounded bun would be acceptable at work. After the bun is secured, braid the rest of your hair in a classic braid beneath the bun.
The High Braid
For a sporty look, take you hair and form a high ponytail. Secure the ponytail tightly with a strong, elastic band. Use gel and completely smooth out the hair leading up to your elastic so that it is sleek and shiny. If you have hair that is slightly unmanageable, spread a dollop of gel through the rest of your hair as well. Using a classic braid style, begin to braid the ponytail. If your elastic is strong, it will ensure that the formation of your braid does not interfere with the sleek ponytail.
It may take a few tries to get the braid sleek and tight to complement your hair. When you do, though, you will have a visually interesting style, since most braids are formed without the structure of the ponytail and rather become the structure themselves.
The Bun Braid
Women with long hair capable of tackling a more difficult braided 'do can create a nice hairstyle using French braids. Part your hair down the middle from front to back and then form a French braid on either side of the part. Tie off each braid when completed and use each braid to form a bun at the nape on each side of your neck. Finish the buns by tucking the tip of the braid inside and securing it with a bobby pin.
Your braids will not only keep your long hair out of the way for a day but will also be the source of many compliments!
