Cornstarch lotion is a fantastic product that can moisturize the skin on your entire body. It is particularly good for soothing dry, chapped hands. I tend to use it on my hands the most after extensive gardening, house cleaning or other activities that render my hands sad and chapped. I have also used it on my feet, particularly in preparation for the summer sandal season or other situations where my otherwise neglected feet might get more than a cursory glance.
The lotion is very light and non-greasy. The recipe here calls for rose water, but if you have a different herb or flower that you prefer for its fragrance or properties, feel free to substitute a similar item. You can also use more distilled water in place of the rose water for an unscented version of this lotion. Rose water is available commercially, however if you would prefer to make your own, here are my instructions for making rose water. To use this lotion simply massage into the skin of your hands face, or entire body.
You Will Need:
2 Tablespoons of rose water
2 Tablespoons of cornstarch (or corn flour)
2 Tablespoons of glycerin (or honey)
½ Cup of distilled water
Microwave safe bowl
6-ounce (or larger) airtight container for storage
Instructions:
1. Place all of the ingredients together in a microwave safe bowl and mix well.
2. Heat the mixture until it is think and at the boiling point. You can do this by heating in a microwave for thirty-second intervals, stirring between each, or in a water bath on the stovetop.
3. Stir well and let the mixture cool completely.
4. Pour the completely cooled lotion into the airtight container for later use.
This recipe should yield about six ounces of lotion. If you find your cornstarch lotion gets to thick, do not panic. You can easily fix the problem with adding a little water, about one teaspoon at a time, and then stirring well.
