If you know how to use your computer, can sew a little bit, or even just have a little bit of imagination and creativity, you can decorate your home with your own home made decorations. Try some of these fun home made decorations and decor items next time you want to decorate your home.

Decorate your home with framed art from your computer

Whether you opt for family photos or that beautiful photo you took of your garden last year or download free art from the internet, you can easily decorate your home with quality artwork from your computer. All you need is a printer with color ink and some high quality photo paper. If you have a little bit of computer savvy, you can even use simple photo edits and effects, like sepia, to add to an artistic flare to the photo. Frame the printed photo using a frame that you already own, or a repainted frame you purchased from the local thrift shop or dollar store. You can easily make a $2.00 frame look like a million dollars by adding a new finish or painting intricate patterns on the frame. Decorate your home by strategically hanging the photo in your living room.

For those that are a little more technologically adept, you can use a program like Photoshop or Illustrator to create your own original images or apply complex filters and effects to a photo. Remember that any photo that you print must be a minimum of 200-300 dpi (dots per square inch). Commonly downloaded images are in jpeg format, which means that when blown up larger, the photo will pixellate and distort. Tiff formats are best for printing a photo to decorate your home.

Decorate your home with your own hand made pillows

You can decorate your home with throw pillows without spending a hundred dollars. Throw pillows are relatively simple decorations to make. Be sure to purchase fabric (or use an old sheet, tablecloth, or blanket), and cut into equally-sized squares. For example, you can take a square tablecloth and even cut it into four squares.

Turn the fabric inside out and sew along the seams. If you are skilled at sewing, you can add a zipper. If not, be sure to leave a small enough hole in one side to turn the pillow right side out and to stuff the pillow with stuffing. Once you have stuffed the pillow, you can use small stitches to sew up the hole. If you do not have stuffing, you can even use extra t-shirts or towels to stuff the pillows. I have one pillowcase that is stuffed with an old comforter. It is soft and comfortable and did not cost me anything.

Decorate your home with original tablecloths and curtains

Essentially, all you need to create a tablecloth or set of curtains is a large piece of fabric and the ability to sew some basic stitches. You can take any piece of square or round fabric large enough to cover your table, and simply sew a small hem around the outside edges of the fabric. Add tassels or fringes for extra decorating flare. Curtains can be made with sheets or fabric purchased from the fabric store. Add fabric loops or hoops to hang on a curtain rod. Find a colorful scarf, fabric belt, or sash to tie the curtains together.

These are just a few of the decorations that you can make to decorate your home. With a little bit of imagination, you can further beautify your home with original paintings, arts and crafts, quilts, or touching portraits of your children and grandchildren - all from your own home.
