Create Your Own Fancy Envelopes in Minutes

Making homemade envelopes is an affordable way to add decoration and design to letters, cards or notes that need to be sent in the mail or presented with a gift. Creating fancy envelopes requires so little time and few supplies you will want to make them for every occasion. Design an envelope to match every one of your handmade cards or make one to match a manufactured greeting card for fun.

The only supplies you need to make your own envelopes are decorative paper, scissors and double-sided tape. It is that easy! You could also use solid colored paper and decorate it yourself. Create a pattern using rubber stamps, stencils or paint your own design. Use paper that measures at least 8.5 inches by 11 inches before folding, if you will mail the envelope.

Lay a sheet of paper, decoration side down, on a hard, flat surface in front of you with the length of the paper facing up and down.

Fold the paper in to three parts. Bring the bottom of the paper up two-thirds of the way to the top of the paper and fold the remainder of the top down to create a flap. Crease the folds on the top and the bottom.

Unfold the top and bottom of the paper. Fold the sides in towards the center, approximately one-inch to create a margin on each side of the paper.

Use scissors to cut the margin off the paper on the top and bottom folds, leaving the center margins intact.

Fold the center margins in towards the center and place a line of double-sided tape on the back of each margin.

Bring the bottom of the paper and refold on the original crease line. Press down on the sides to attach the tape.

Insert your letter, note or card inside the envelope. Place a line of glue along the inside of the top flap and fold down to close the envelope. Use a decorative sticker to seal the envelope if you are not sending it through the mail.

Wasn't that easy? Now that you know how to make your own envelope, you can make one in any color, pattern or theme for any occasion.
