Create Your Own Spider-Man Costume for Halloween

Lindsay Maddox
Adults and children alike love donning a Spider-Man costume for Halloween. But many of the Spider-Man costumes you see in the stores are incredibly pricey. Here, you will learn tips on how to create your own Spider-Man costume at home, without forking out a whole ton of money.

Spider-Man Costume: The Head

You have a number of options to recreate the perfect Spider-Man costume head. One, is to buy an extravagant Spider-Man costume mask, such as the one seen here, or this less expensive Spider-Man costume mask, or least expensive of all, a little face paint. If you choose to go the face painting route, here are a few tricks. First, you will need red, black, and white face paint. Start by painting an angled half circle around the eyes in white, as seen here. Next, paint the entire face (or just the upper half of the face) red. Grab your black face paint and draw a thick line outlining the white half circles. Finally, create your web with the black paint by painting one line from the forehead to the chin. Using the tip of the nose as the center of the web, create lines every inch or so all the way around the face. (For instance, tip of the nose out to the ear, tip of the nose up to the temple, etc.) To polish off your spider web, start on the bridge of the nose and create a "u" curved line to connect two lines. Continue this in a circle, until you come back to the bridge of the nose. Do this again further out on the face, and again surrounding the entire face. Voila, you have the perfect face paint to compliment your Spider-Man costume. This sounds much more complicated than it is, so for some inspiration, check out the great Spider-Man costume face paintings here, and here.

Spider-Man Costume: The Body

The first part to the perfect Spider-Man costume is finding blue pants. Blue sweatpants would likely do the trick, but the most effective Spider-Man costume will employ blue spandex or leggings. You can find these at your local thrift store, or online. Even more simply, a pair of blue jeans will suffice. Next, comes the top. If funds are very low, a plain red turtleneck or long sleeved shirt will do. Even better, a tee shirt like this one will really add to your Spider-Man costume. If you do go with a tee shirt, however, be sure to put a red or blue long sleeved shirt underneath because of the next important Spider-Man costume feature: the gloves.Your Spider-Man costume gloves can be as simple as plain red knitted gloves that you can pick up at your local drugstore for a dollar. Better yet, authentic Spider-Man costume gloves such as those found here and here. Finally, the Spider-Man costume is not complete without paying attention to the feet. If you have red shoes, such as these converse that would work perfectly. Or, if you would rather have the true Spider-Man costume look, try these Spider-Man costume boot covers.

Spider-Man Costume: Accessories

After all of the red and blue that you will be sporting, along with the many spider webs that will decorate your attire, you will probably need very little in the way of accessories. One fun accessory idea for your Spider-Man costume, however is silly string. This Spider-Man web blaster shoots out silly string that makes it look like you really are Spider-Man shooting out a spider web.

If a Spider-Man costume is what you desire, don't feel obligated to buy the ones sold in the stores. You can easily create your own at home, and have a lot more fun with it as well. Have a happy and safe Halloween!
