Create Patterns for Your Website

A pattern is a series of lines, dots, shapes, or photos that make up an image. Patterns are commonly used on the web as backgrounds for web pages, especially when there's a main content table in the middle of the page. It's an easy way to add a funky or intricate design to your website. If you want to create patterns for use on the web, you have a number of software options to choose from.

Visit the BG Patterns online pattern making tool to create patterns for the web. Select a background color, a canvas texture, and image (or upload your own image) to make up your pattern. When done, click "Download image" to save the pattern to your computer as a JPEG file. You can then upload the JPEG to your web server and use it in your page background or other elements of your web pages.

Create patterns for your website using the Repper online pattern design tool. Move your mouse around inside of the "Create Your Pattern" box to choose a pre-designed pattern you like or click "Upload" to add your own image to the pattern workspace. When done, click "Download Pattern" to save the file (a JPEG image) to your computer and then upload it to your web server. The lite version is free or your can pay for the Repper Pro version, which has additional options.

Use Adobe Photoshop to create patterns for the web. This is ideal if you want complete control over the final look of your web pattern. Open a blank file sized as a perfect square (like 250 by 250 pixels). The "Fill" option on the "Edit" menu allows you to choose a "Pattern" from a list of pre-made options. You can also create your own separate pattern in a blank Photoshop document then click "Define Pattern" on the "Edit" menu, which will cause the pattern to display in the list of "Fill" options. After you fill your blank document with the pattern, save the file as a JPEG file and then upload it to your web server for use on your website. You can get download a free trial version of Photoshop to get the hang of this program if you're not familiar with it yet.
