Create Perfect Curls for Fall

Laura Leiva

Whether you are getting ready to head back to school or just looking forward to the cooler season, changing the look of your hair for fall keeps your style fresh and up-to-date. Celebrities such as Lauren Conrad, Kate Hudson and Blake Lively have all been seen with sexy, tousled waves that give hair body and texture. If you want the style for yourself, only a few items are needed to re-create the style.

Heat Protectant

Whenever you use heated styling tools, such as curling irons, rollers or even a hairdryer, it's important to protect your hair from the harsh temperatures. Heat damages hair by drying it out, burning it or even causing the hair cuticle to break. There are heat protectant products to fit any budget, one of them being the inexpensive Heat Protection Spray by Tresemme. Found at any retail store, this product is easy to spray around the entire head and provides a light mist to distribute the protectant. It's a winner of many beauty awards, such as the Allure Best of Beauty Award and Total Beauty Reader's Choice. This product leaves a pleasant fragrance, keeps hair soft and manageable and does not weigh your style down.

Rollers

While you can create curls with a curling iron, a hot roller set is easy and convenient to use. To obtain a soft wavy look in your style, look for jumbo or large rollers. Many sets have a variety of sizes from which to choose; however, the smaller rollers will leave you with tighter ringlets and will not give you the desired style. One set that I find easy to use and inexpensive is the Conair Extreme Heat Jumbo and Super Jumbo Rollers. Rollers are convenient simply because you can continue to get ready for your day as the rollers cool down.

Creating a Style

After making sure your hot rollers are good and hot, spray the entire head with your desired heat protectant spray. If you want extra hold in your style, spray the hair with a lightweight hairspray and then brush out to smooth. Section the hair into three parts: One down the middle of the head and one on each side. Starting with the section that runs down the middle of the head, take 1-inch sections and twirl them around the super jumbo rollers. Wrap the sections around the rollers so the curls are going away from the face. When working on the side pieces, use the jumbo rollers to curl the hair away from the face and secure to the head vertically with the provided clips. Once you finish, allow the rollers to cool completely before removing.

Finish

After the rollers are cooled, remove one by one, starting from the nape and sides of the head and working your way up. Allow the ringlets to fall vertically, and then once all of the rollers are removed, finger comb your hair to break up the curls for a softer look. Spritz the style with hairspray, such as Pantene's Touchable Volume or Bed Head Masterpiece Hairspray, if desired.
