First, you will need a container. This should be something that the new mom can use afterwards. A plastic pail is practical, but not necessarily very pretty. A basket is elegant, but rather clichéd. You might want to go with something in between, such as an antique colander or a wicker laundry basket.
Next, you need a liner. This can be as simple as colourful tissue paper, or you may want to line it with a fun print burp cloth to protect Mom's clothes from spit up. Arrange it neatly in the container, with corners hanging out. You can add a raffia or ribbon bow around the outside.
The gifts that go into a new mom basket should be all about making Mom feel good. You might want to include a copy of Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul, a journal for her to write in, along with a special pen, or a small photo album where she can keep photos of herself with her new baby.
Don't forget physical relief. Numbing drops for an episiotomy, Tylenol and a calming herbal tea such as camomile can all be a big help. Keep in mind that if a mom is nursing, she will have to be careful what she takes. You can also include a microwavable heating pack for aches and pains.
Some little luxury items like hot cocoa and a bag of cookies will be appreciated as well. You might also include a book of crossword puzzles and sudoku as well, to keep her busy while feeding the baby. A DVD or two never hurts either.
Since you know the mother best, you will be able to choose items and little gifts that she will enjoy, based on her personal tastes. For a chocolate lover, sprinkle Hershey's kisses throughout the basket. An artist might appreciate a new set of brushes, while a quilter will enjoy a bag of fat quarters. Tailor the basket to the likes of the mother.
With such a special focus on the new mom, your gift will be remembered for years to come. You can certainly include a thing or two for the new baby, but making the mom feel that she is worthwhile, too is priceless.
