To Make a Picture Frame Out of An Old Tire You Will Need:
An Old tire of course
Spray on Primer
Spray on Paint
Circle of regular glass
Art Work
Epoxy Glue
The first step is to thoroughly clean your tires. This is very important so that you primer and paint will adhere.
Once the tire has dried then go ahead and put on a coat of spray on primer.
Let the primer dry. Then apply 2 coats of spray on paint in any color you want. I recommended letting each layer dry before you apply the next coat of paint.
Be sure to paint the entire tire inside out and. You will be able to see into the tire, so this is a very necessary step.
Now, you are going to need a circle of glass that is about the same size as your hole in the middle of the tire. You will want it to be slightly bigger, like maybe ΒΌ of an inch. Just don't get the circle f glass so much bigger that you can not insert it into the hole.
You can have regular old glass cut at most hardware stores. If they can not cut a circle, I am sure they will recommend someone who can.
Now, Run a bead of epoxy glue inside of the tire on the edge of the inner circle. Press your glass inside this on the inside of the tire. This means you needed to decide which will be the front of the tire. Lay it front side down on a flay work surface. Run the thick bead of epoxy glue. Then carefully insert the glass through the opening and into the tire. Then press it down on to the glue. You are creating the front piece of glass in the frame.
Now, you have e a few choices for mounting your art work inside. You can have a matte cut in a circle to fit inside as well. In that case I would have the matter touching the glass in the front of the ire. Then have your photo or art work inside of the matte. You could simply tape them in place from behind so that they are easy to change out when you want to.
Now, you could also decide where you tire will be hanging on the wall and mount your photo or artwork on the wall with some double sided tape. Then hang the tire over the photo or artwork. This way can create some dimension a cause people to have to look inside to see the artwork.
To hang the tire I recommend drilling a screw into a stud in the wall. If you cannot find a stud be sure to use a toggle bolt or even those drywall screws that come with the plastic anchors. The tire will be heavy and need some support.
This tire frame would work great alone on the wall or even as a grouping of three tires in a row. If you have an empty vertical space in your home why not hang the tire vertically starting about 2 feet off the ground. You can hang them so that they touch each other and create a very dramatic column.
If you have one large open wall you could hang a large grouping of tires sort of like you see those patterns of tires laid out for football players and army guys running through on TV all the time. Just make a row of three tires in the middle of your wall. Then place two tires offset on top of those two tires. Repeat below the first three tires as well.

Post a CommentNice. I like custom art. It's fun to make and fun to look at. My dad took a motorcycle seat and put it on the bottom of a desk chair. It was awesome.
