Create a Remove Your Shoes Sign for Your Front Door

Are you looking for a polite yet fun way to ask guests to remove their shoes before entering your home? Create this clever little sign that you can place on your front door year round. You can use crafting materials that you have on hand. If you have an electronic cutting machine, this project will be a snap although a machine is not required.

Supply List

• Unfinished wooden sign in your choice of size and style
• Cream acrylic paint
• Black acrylic paint
• Paintbrushes
• Glossy clear acrylic sealer
• Brown and black self-sticking vinyl
• Scraps of card stock in solid and patterned colors
• Scissors and letter stencils or an electronic cutting machine (such as the Cricut)
• Optional: shoe stickers

Step-by-Step Directions to create a Remove Your Shoes Sign

1. Paint two coats of the cream acrylic paint on the entire front surface of the wooden sign. Be sure to allow plenty of time to dry between each coat.
2. Paint around the sign border using the black paint. Apply two coats and allow to dry in between each coat.
3. Measure your sign surface. You want to be sure to cut your letters to fit well within the surface area.
4. Use the black vinyl and cut out the word "Please" using scissors and letter stencils or your electronic cutting machine. In the photo sample, I used an italic font and my Cricut.
5. Use the brown vinyl and cut out the following words: "Remove Your Shoes." Be sure that the letters fit your sign before cutting.
6. Peel the vinyl backs off the letters and apply them to the sign. Start at the top and work your way down.
7. Press the letters firmly onto the sign.
8. Optional: Cut out shoes using your electronic cutting machine or freehand using the scissors. In the article photo example, I used my Cricut and selected the boot from the Happy Hauntings cartridge. Pick a color scheme that you like! You can also use shoe stickers in place of paper shoes.
9. Spray an even coat of the glossy clear acrylic sealer across the entire sign.
10. Allow to dry and spray a second coat.

Your shoe sign is now completed so go ahead and place it in your front entry area, either inside or outside. Stand back and admire your work!
