A bed typically takes up more room in a bedroom than any other single piece of furniture, but other than stashing large items beneath it, most beds offer little to no storage. If you have a small child's bedroom in your house, discover how to get the most out his bed as a great storage solution.
Shop Smart. The first key to using a bed for bedroom storage is to shop for the right one. Many current children's beds offer some drawers underneath the bed for storing blankets, towels, clothing, or shoes. But while three drawers may offer a bit of extra space, you can find better options for greater storage. Ask the store salesman, or search online, for a loft bed. Loft beds are raised like a bunk bed but instead of having a second bed beneath, they offer storage such as a desk, or drawers (or both!). Other search terms that will help you find a bed with great storage are "trundle," and "captain's bed." This terminology will help you find the bed you are looking for with plenty of storage.
Think Wood. There are many storage beds out there that are made of cheap pressed woods and plastics. If you want this bed to truly be used as storage, look for solid wood. Sure you will pay more for solid wood but a storage bed is being asked to be a multi-tasker so it's only fair that you purchase something sturdy and long lasting. Look for solid wood construction, drawers with metal casings that slide easily over and over, and as much creative use out of the space as possible. Also, if possible, find a storage bed that sits on slats. Most loft and bunk beds require something called a "bunky board" to give support in lieu of a boxed springs. You will save yourself about $50 if you can find a storage bed that comes with wooded slats rather than having to purchase a separate support item.
Use the Space Wisely. Once you have purchase a good sturdy storage bed, use the space the storage bed has to offer wisely. What will best fit in the drawers? Often items such as socks, underwear and pajamas fit well in the smaller drawers of storage beds. Storage beds can also be a great place to store small toys or art supplies. If the storage bed has an area for a trundle bed underneath, you may considering nixing the additional bed and instead use that space for blankets, sheets, towels, and stuffed animals.
A storage bed is a wonderful way to make the most out of a small bedroom. If your child's bedroom is small or lacks storage, considering purchasing a storage bed to make the most out of the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom.

Post a CommentWow, I love that bedroom set! Looks much cleaner that what we used to do ~ which is slide totes beneath the bed. Of course, that only works when the kids actually used them :)
Hurray for the feature and thanks to all for the great comments! That is indeed my son's actual bedroom.
Got my son one of these and it worked great. Allowed him to ditch a chest of drawers and have room instead for a drawing desk.
Congrats! This article is featured on the Parenting category page.
