Create Themed Kitchen Refrigerator Magnets from Colored Bottle Caps

Lyn McCallister
Decorative magnets can be expensive to purchase and you cannot always find the right magnets to match your décor. This article will guide you through quick and easy steps to create your own themed kitchen magnets using colored bottle caps. These magnets also work well in dorms, offices, or as gifts.

Note: These supplies are available at most major craft retailers. If you cannot find the products locally, check the end of the article for online retailers.

Supplies to Make Colored Bottle Cap Magnets

Glue gun
Scissors
Scrap paper
Pencil
Themed scrapbook paper, stickers, or other small accents
1 bottle Glossy Accents (clear, dimensional embellishment and sealant)
1 package bottle caps in your choice of color
1 package ¾ inch ceramic disc magnets

Step by Step Instructions to Make Colored Bottle Cap Magnets

1. Choose the magnet theme that you want to make. In the photo example, we used a cat theme and red bottle caps.

2. Make a pattern using the scrap paper and pencil. The pattern should be the inside circle of the bottle cap.

3. Use the pattern to trace onto your themed scrapbook paper. This is the design element that you want to show inside your magnet. You can also use 3D objects such as small buttons, die cuts, ribbons, or other craft accessory.

4. Place the cut shape into the bottle cap.

5. Use the Glossy Accents to bond the design to the bottle cap. This medium dries to a clear, glossy finish but will look opaque as you apply it. Apply the product slowly to avoid bubbles.

6. Allow the Glossy Accents to dry completely. Depending on how much product you use, you may want to wait overnight before proceeding.

7. Use the hot glue gun to glue the magnet to the back of the bottle cap. Your design should be facing outwards.

8. Repeat these steps for each magnet.

Bottle Cap Magnet Theme Ideas

You can be really creative with this fun magnet project! Go beyond the kitchen and see how you might use these magnets in other areas. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Use them as birthday party favors.

2. Turn the magnets into tic-tac-toe pieces and make a game for your child.

3. Make alphabet or number magnets.

4. Create fun magnets for the office to track: in the office, out of the office, traveling, telecommuting, etc.
