Create an Under the Sea Bedroom for Your Baby Boy

Paige Turner
Creating an Under the Sea themed room for my baby was an exciting and rewarding experience. I found inspiration almost everywhere I looked. I love the personalized room we created, and I know that you can do it, too!

Carpet and Paint

When we bought our house, the baby's room was the first to get decorated. The carpet needed to be replaced anyway, so we chose a sand color. If we choose to change the room later on, the carpet will still be neutral enough to compliment another theme. If you have hardwood floors in the baby's room, you can easily add a throw rug.

Although you can paint the walls blue and call it a day, my husband and I decided to really dedicate the underwater room to it's theme. We painted the ceiling and a few inches of the top of the walls light blue. Then we painted the rest of the walls a darker shade of blue. Where the two met at the top, we painted a wavy pattern. Remember, this doesn't have to be perfect.

After the paint dried and we applied a second coat, it was time to add some embellishments. I painted big puffy clouds onto the ceiling. On the walls we painted some plain green plants. If you are particularly artistic, you can paint fish right into the scenes. We aren't artistically inclined, so we found a way around that.

Fabrics

I headed straight to the fabric store to find the perfect curtains and blankets. Although you can certainly hang plain blue curtains up, we chose a flannel cloud print. The flannel was thick enough to filter some of the light during the day without making the room too dark. If you don't sew, you can buy those plain blue curtains and paint clouds or fish on them with fabric paint.

Making a no sew baby blanket out of fleece is easy. Follow a pattern like this one on AllKindsOfBabyStuff.com and you can have a snuggly blanket complete within an hour. I used an underwater print with a matching blue solid fleece. Fleece is soft and doesn't fray. Please note that according to the CDC an infant should not sleep with anything in his crib.

Finishing Touches

I really love having glow in the dark stars on the ceilings of children's rooms. In this room, I placed the stars inside the clouds so that they weren't detectable during the day. I found wall stickers with fish and whales on ebay, but you can find similar ones at online retailers such as wallnuts.com. You may even be able to find them in your local home improvement store. Stuffed animal nets not only keep the room neat, but also add to the underwater theme. You can easily find pictures and frames that feature underwater life to add a spark to the room.

I was lucky enough to find a whale shaped toy box at a local consignment store. You could also find an unfinished wooden toy box and paint it using your leftover wall paint. You can also decorate the dresser or changing table with some leftover stickers. When I couldn't find a lamp that would compliment the room, I purchased a plain lamp and sponge painted the shade.

Decorating your baby boy's room can be a lot of fun. Using this guide for inspiration you can let your imagination run wild and create a special and unique bedroom that is perfect for your son.

Although decorating a baby's room can be fun, a recent New Zealand study found that babies who share a room with their non-smoking parents have 1/5 the risk of dying from SIDS.
