Creating a 3D Looking Earth Without a 3D Program

3D Earth in Adobe After Effects

1. Create a new folder on your computer called earth

2. go to http://planetpixelemporium.com and download the following fullsize images

earthmap1k.jpg

and place it in your earth folder you created in step 1

4.Open After Effects and import the two images you downloaded

5. Drag your earthcloudmap image to the create a new composition film strip located next to 8bpc at the bottom of your project panel

6. Drag earthmap image to the create a new composition window

7. Create a new comp NTSC DV ten seconds in duration

8. Drag earthmap comp to the layer stack in your timeline

9. Place the effect cc sphere on the earthmap comp in your layer stack. Change the effects to the following

Radius 116

Offset 500.250

Rotation Y : +41

Render: Full

Light

Light Intensity 100

light color white

light height 30

light direction -64

Shading

ambient 10

diffuse 100

Specular 10

Roughness 0.050

Metal: 100

Reflective 0.0

Reflection map: none

internal shadows unchecked

transparency falloff unchecked

10. Create a new solid a light blue in color. This will be our ozone layer. rename it to ozone and move it to the bottom of your layer stack

11. select your ozone layer and place the cc sphere effect on it and change the following parameters

change radius so that it is slightly bigger than your earth

Render full

Light

light intensity 100

light color white

light height 80

light direction +34

12. Select your ozone layer and hit the letter T to bring up opacity settings. Reduce opacity to a low number so it looks more like ozone
