Creating Basic Effects on an Image

Ashley B
This tutorial will teach you how to do basic effects on a picture in Adobe Photo shop CS2. Throughout this you will learn how to brighten, sharpen, add coloring effects, and much more to your images.

Open up your Adobe Photo shop. Once you have that open you will need to find a picture you would like to use. I am using the very famous and beautiful, Angelina Jolie for my example. After you have your picture open, crop and re-size it until it fits your taste. (Picture 1)

Go to Filter at the top and select Sharpen. This will Sharpen your image to bring out the features of the picture. You can sharpen it however many times you would like to. I usually sharpen once or twice. Next duplicate your image twice, by going to Layer then Duplicate Layer. Once you have two duplicated layers set the bottom duplicated layer to Blend Mode: Multiply 100%, then set the top duplicated layer to Blend Mode: Screen 100%. Your image should be more brighter now. (Picture 2)

Next we will be adding a color effect to our image. Make a new layer on your Layers Palette by going to Layer then New Layer, or you can click the double paper on the bottom of your Layer's Palette. Once you've created a new layer, you will need to select a color you want to add to your image. I am using a light pretty purple for my example. I filled my new layer with the color, and set the layer to Blend Mode: Color 100%. (Picture 3)

You will need to duplicate your colored layer you just created and set that layer to Blend Mode: Screen 70%. I set the layer down to 70% Opacity so the image would not appear to bright. However you can play around with the settings until you find something that fits your needs. (Picture 4)

Now you can add any kinds of brushes, textures, patterns that you want to add. I'm going to add a striped pattern. Create a new layer on your Layers Palette and fill it with the striped pattern that I am using (Picture 5). You will need to make this into a pattern. By doing this go to Edit then Define Pattern. Once you have your pattern defined you will need to go to Layer then New Fill Layer then select Pattern and find the pattern you defined and select it.

Your pattern should appear on your image. Set the Opacity for the pattern at 20% or anything that you like. (Picture 6) Now you will be adding a solid 1 pixel border around your image. By doing this you will need to create a new layer. After your new layer has been created go to Select then Select All. Next you will go to Edit then Stroke and select a color you want to set your border with then click OK. (Picture 7)

Now you are all done adding special effects to your image. The key is to play around with different effects until you find something you're looking for. It takes a lot of time and patience.
