Creating the Best Ferret Bedroom

Rebecca Furtado
One of the joys of being a parent is giving children quality things they need and like to have. The same is true for pet parents. Many dog owners who are gone at work all day take pride in knowing they have provided their dog with the most comfortable dog bed and crate. The same is true for cat lovers who may speed a couple hundred dollars on a fully loaded cat tree. Ferrets, like kids and other pets, need a nice bedroom to sleep in.

If you are lucky enough to own a ferret the good news is your can make your furry friend very happy and comfortable for a great deal less money than you can a dog or cat. Ferrets are get pets because they are easy to take care of and interact with people so well. Some apartments do not allow them because of chewing issues, if you are lucky enough to have one there are some great products you can provide your furry ferret friends.

Ferrets sleep a lot and therefore spend a significant amount of time in their cage. Provide tem with a great bedroom for when they are awake and you are at school or work. them a very spacious cage. The ideal cage should be a minimum of 18 inches long. It should be at least18 inches deep and thirty inches wide. Having a multilevel cage with tunnels is a good idea to keep your ferret entertained is sure to leave space for all the rest of their bedroom furnishings like a hammock, litter box, food dishes, and water bottle. Do over fill their room so much they can not run around a bit.

Like human bedrooms if the room is too hot or bright you will not sleep or want to play in it. Provide your ferret with living quarters that are cool and dark. Make sure the cage you choose lets air circulate. Still you want your ferret to stay in his bedroom when you are not home so ideally wires should be 1 inch by 2 inches wide.

Keep you ferret entertained in his bedroom and he won't be as destructive when he is visiting yours or some other room in the human house. Give your ferret a small amount of toys to play with. Rotate out toys every few days to keep your ferret from getting bored.

If the floor of your ferret's cage is wire, you might want to consider covering it with a softer material like shelf lining. Just make sure every once in a while that it is not coming up off the floor of the cage. If it does your ferret may entertain himself by shredding his bedroom "carpet".

The most important aspect of a ferret bedroom is the bed. Like human bedrooms the bed is the focus of the room. Unlike, kids beds you will not have to nag your ferret to make his bed. Fleece ferret beds are a good choice. They come in a variety of styles and can be purchased online for fewer than twenty dollars. Be sure you get a bed that is "just right". Your ferret is not Goldilocks and will not be testing beds. A ferret bed that is too big will sag and one that is too small will hang to straight. You ferret will not sleep in an uncomfortable hammock.

Lastly, you can provide your ferret a "do not disturb" sign on his cage door, but unless your cat can read it you are probably just wasting your time.

I live in a small city in the midwest. I am the pet parent to four cats, two birds , and one lonely dust bunny dog named Nigel. I have two human children. They are both teenagers and I occasionally see them.  View profile
