Creating Better Job Opportunities During the Recession

Tammy Kane
Lately everything seems gloomy especially when you are out of a job. Sometimes all everyone talks about is how bad things are and who is closing down. This perpetuates hopelessness and depression, which is not productive or helpful in getting a job.

More people are now applying for each job opening and things look hopeless, people can grow desperate, and there are many people out there taking advantage of that with job scams. There's everything from get-rich-quick schemes to the thousands of work from home jobs, which usually require fees, and don't pay off. These people have found ways to make big money from the hopeless and desperate.

There are a few small things that you can do to increase your chances in getting a job.

One tip is to make a list of all the companies where you would like to work. Write the phone numbers down and call each one. Get the name of the contact person you need to speak to, who is in charge of hiring and ask if you can speak to them. Ask if they have any openings and tell them why you are interested in working for their specific company. If they say there isn't anything, ask if you can send a resume anyway just in case something comes up, and address it their attention. Call back from time to time, and ask to speak to the same person but keep it short, be respectful because they do have a job to do, don't become a problem. Just explain that you hope to catch an job when it opens. It could happen and you could get a job easier or faster because you showed so much interest, and they won't have to waste time on lots of interviews.

Have your resume looked at by a local employment office or someone with resume experience. A bad resume can keep you from even getting an interview.

Network, put the word out through your friends and social network and mention what you are looking for.

Did you know that more millionaires were made during the great depression than in any other time in history? It is a time when people try new things or start new businesses.

Be creative, what talents do you have and how can create something to fill a need? Can you find a need for what you can do? Sometimes just thinking of how you can help existing businesses can help you too. Think creatively, it could mean a better future for you in the long run.
