Creating a Budget for a Destination Wedding

Jean Marquit
A destination wedding can provide an especially memorable and romantic wedding day. However, creating a budget for your destination wedding gets a little tricky. A destination wedding offers challenges that you do not normally see in a wedding budget for the big day in your hometown. Here are some basic tips that can help you put together a budget for your destination wedding.

Figure Out Exactly What You Can Spend on Your Destination Wedding

Before you do anything else, figure out how much your destination wedding is going to cost you. Sit down with your spouse to be - and your parents if they are helping to pay for the wedding - and decide exactly how much you are willing and able to spend on your destination wedding. Decide how much of a budget you have to work with and realize that you will have to stick with it. If you go over in one area, you should cut back in another.

Decide on Your Priorities

Once you have decided what your total wedding budget will be, the next thing you need to do is decide what is most important to you. Your destination wedding will likely limit the number of guests you invite - and who will come. While you do not have to pay for the attendees, it is in good taste to offer to pay for bridal attendants and groomsmen, if you are having them. Figure out what is most important to you. How many people do you want to attend? Do you need a grand reception hall? Or is a simple ceremony on a beach your preference? How much do you want to spend on flowers? Who do you feel must attend? Rank each item by order of importance. If you run out of money in your budget by the end of the list, then you can drop the least important items off the list.

Look for Destination Wedding Packages

It is usually possible to stretch your budget by looking for special packages for your destination wedding. Many times it is possible to find accommodations included with wedding packages (especially prominent for destination weddings in Las Vegas and in tropical islands in places like the Pacific and the Caribbean) that offer a set amount of flowers, wedding facilities and an officiator. Even if you can't find a destination wedding package, it is possible to book a special package in many areas that includes lodging, airfare and other amenities. Looking for good deals can help you with your budget.

It is possible to plan a perfect destination wedding. However, you will have to engage in special planning, and put together a realistic budget.
