1. Realize and acknowledge that what you are doing is a matter of choice. You have chosen to have this habit, you can choose to change it. You have to also be willing to change what you are doing. Until this happens, you will continue your struggle.
2. It is mind over matter and goes back to choice. Unwanted habits start when you choose to do things in a specific manner. You need to determine in your mind that this particular choice has to go. If you really want to break a habit, it takes mind power. Once your mind is on the new path, you start replacing bad habits with new ones that do not make room for the old habits.
3. This ties in with mind over matter in that you have to completely change how you think. If you know that what you are doing is a choice and that you can change these choices by new actions, you will realize that changing your thinking process is important. When you are ready and willing to make a healthier choice, keep your focus on the new thought until it becomes a new habit.
4. Everyone loves to be rewarded, no matter your age. Creating change in your life can be painful. When you have made progress toward your new goal, give yourself that gold star! Take yourself out to a movie or buy yourself a nice bauble. Positive reinforcement works just as well for the grownups as it does for the little ones.
5. Practice, practice, practice. This is the most important lesson in changing habits. Once that new, improved behavior is in place, you have to keep at it. The more you practice the new behavior, the faster it will become a part of your new thinking and therefore more natural. Once it is ingrained in your thinking, the struggle will get a lot easier.
Today is a good time to start a more positive habit. It may not be easy at first, but it will get better the more you practice and focus on what better things you want in your life.
