The traditional wedding centerpiece created with flowers can get very expensive and boring. Non-traditional themed wedding centerpieces are becoming very popular with the younger crowd.

Because of the beautiful sandy beaches in California that sit at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, many couples opt for a beach themed wedding. The California couples that are lucky enough to actually get married on the beach can actually get married on a sandy beach. the lucky bride and groom can get married while their guest listen to the ocean waves crashing to the shore.

If a location does not lend itself to a wedding held at the beach the couple can still enjoy a beach theme using a sand and beach themed wedding centerpiece that is combines all the marvelous natural elements from the land and the sea.

Creating the perfect sand and beach centerpiece will enhance the beach experience. Making these sand and beach centerpieces is easy and fun. To create a colorful and fun sand & beach themed wedding centerpiece, you just need the following easy to find items from a local craft store.

1)A clear glass bowl or container

2)Colored sand

3)Funnel for the sand

4)Brightly colored plastic fish

5)Sea horses

6)Shells

7)Colored glass marbles

The art sand is available in over 18 colors so you can mix and match the sand colors to coordinate with your wedding decor. The color scheme we liked best was using coral, blue, hot pink and teal for the sand art that we created at the bottom of the bowl. We layered the color to the desired height that we wanted. The effect is pretty dramatic. We used iridescent pearl glass marbles interspersed in the sand.

The glass marbles are also available at most local craft stores. These large glass marbles come in every color imaginable. One idea for the colorful sand and beach themed centerpiece is to layer the colored sand starting at the bottom of the bowl and continue layering with different colors until you have filled the bowl half full.

Place some of the seashells in an outer circle in the middle of the sand with the outer shell showing against the glass bowl. After you have the bowl filled to about two thirds capacity. Place some of the more colorful shells and other objects of your choice on the top of the sand and you are finished. This is a simple design but has a huge impact. Put a color ribbon around the top of the jar and you are finished.

A more traditional idea is to place a large pillar candle in the middle of the glass jar. Use an old candle to melt to create a foundation for the large candle. Place the colored sand in layered colors around the candle. Fill the bowl half full with sand. Then place a few shells at the top of the sand.

Another unique idea for the beach and sand theme is to create a little mini vignette of the beach within the glass bowl. This delightful and colorful centerpiece can include the colored sand as the base of the vignette. Then you can add colorful tropical plastic fish, seashells, sea horses and some of the glass marbles to create a picturesque scene at the beach.

Place color coordinated ribbon around the top of the bell jar. Use 12x12 glass mirror tiles that you can purchase from a hardware store on the table as part of your themed centerpiece,. The reflection of your wedding themed masterpiece will intrigue and delight your guest. You can also attach some mini shells to the end of the ribbon for more dramatic effects. These colorful bowls create a wonderful visual treat for your guest as well as a unique memento of your unique wedding day.

    OK what about this:
Get a 14 inch round mirror
Get a gigantic Martini or Brandy glass vase
Put the vase on the mirror
Fill Vase with colored gems, add water and real fish
On the mirror put some sand and seashells with candle votives - you can get miniature beach chairs with candle votives in them at wedding channel.com
Add submersible LED lights to the vase for effect
