Creating a Fall Herb Garden

Many of the plants seen in flower gardens are actually edible herbs and many gardeners are smart in using these throughout the year to later harvest and use in the kitchen. There are also a number of easy to grow herbs to create the perfect fall herb garden.

If you are a cook you know the importance of not running out of a specific herb for favorite recipes and such. Having them handy is not only important but also fun especially when you have grown it in cared for it in your personal herb garden.

Herbs are used to flavor or foods and in some cases are also used as medicinal agents. There are a number of popular easy to grown herbs for fall including the following; mint, dill, anise, caraway and coriander are just a few. There are a few herbs that are also easy to grow in the fall that are used for seasoning of foods including; basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, chamomile, parsley, chervil and more. Decide on the specific herbs needed for regular use to make harvesting of the herbs easier.

Many herbs may have a wide variety of species from which to select so even though you can have easy to grow herbs for fall do a little research to determine what best works for the type of dishes you enjoy. When you do harvest your herbs it is important to store them in tightly sealed dark glass containers or something similar to preserve taste and flavor.

Place your herb garden in an area that is easy to get to so that you can do what needs to be done to protect your plants in the case of inclement weather. Try to separate the annual herbs from the perennial herbs so when it is time to harvest other plants won't be harmed. Use good soil and keep your herb garden thinned out and properly weeded. When it is time to harvest an herb to accentuate a harvest dish or special vegetable the line at the market won't matter so much having fresh herbs at your fingertips.
