Creating a Falling Leaves Scene on Your Home's Accent Wall

Having an accent wall can create a focal point for any room. Why not try to make yours interesting by putting a mural on the wall instead of just one color. This article's goal is to help you create a falling leaves scene. Now be sure to look around your room to decide what season you want to paint. Though if you want to be really creative use non-traditional colors for your mural.

First off choose your pallet. Choose colors that you know will go with your room. I like using acrylics as they are water based and easy to clean up. You'll also want a floating medium. This will act like water without breaking down the paint. If you want to use stencils go ahead but I find them to be too uniform. The whole point of this wall is to be creative and to be a focal point. Not to blend in and be bland.

I'm going to describe how to paint the leaves so that they have some depth. I won't be adding trees but you can and just use the same method. You are going to want to start small and light. You need to use a good amount of floating medium because you are painting leaves that are to appear far away. Start out small because like I said you are painting leaves that are far away. I would make more leaves at the top of your mural and thin them out as you go down. Let that dry completely before you do your next layer. Then next layer you're going to want to make the leaves a little darker and a little bigger with just a touch more definition to them. Not too much as the leaves are still far away. Again, let that layer dry. Continue doing this and let each layer dry before starting the next layer. As your leaves get "closer" you want to make each layer successively darker and more detailed as well as bigger. Don't put the same amount of darker leaves as the lighter ones because you will go overkill on the amount of leaves in your mural and it will look like a muddled mess. Your final layer should have life sized leaves (or bigger if you want) with a lot of detail or as detailed as you can get them (if using stencils). The finished product should remind you of an autumn day when the wind blows all the leaves off of the trees.
