Cat Bed
Instead of giving the items in a gift basket that neither the cat nor the owner may be able to get much use out of, put the items in a cat bed. Opt for one that has high edges so that the items can fit inside and the cat has something to cuddle up against. If possible, choose one in a color that closely resembles the décor in the owner's home so it blends in well.
Blanket
Some cats love cuddling up in blankets, even if they have a cat bed. Put a soft cat blanket inside the cat bed so, when he chooses, he can curl up with it and move it around with his paws. Choose it in a complementary color to the cat bed.
Cat Food
Some may be inclined to purchase high end cat food that could make the gift basket appear extra special, however, it is better to go with the cat food that the animal is used to. Switching foods on a cat is not a good idea as some cats not only can be finicky, but may also get an upset stomach from it. Buy the cat food that he normally eats; if possible include one bag of dry and a few cans of wet.
Cat Treats
Instead of buying a bag or two of cat treats, make your own at home. Some simple recipes require only a few ingredients so they can be done with very little time and effort. Make sure to write on a small piece of paper the ingredients that you used so owner knows what his pet is eating. Place the treats in a small baggie and tie it with a ribbon.
Cat Toys
You may or may not want to include cat toys as some cats simply are not interested in playing with them. If the cat loves toys, choose some that encourage playtime between the owner and his cat instead of solitary playtime. Consider choosing hand held toys with ribbons or feathers attached.
Grooming
Skip on buying shampoo or sprays as some cats have sensitive skin and may have to use special products; some owners also choose not to bathe their cats at all so it would be a waste of money. Instead, opt for a nice collar or a deshedding tool, which can greatly benefit the cat.
When creating a gift basket for a cat, keep in mind that it is for the owner as well. Choose items that they can both get use out of as opposed to items you think are cute or would be something you would like to receive yourself. Each cat and owner are different, so keeping them in mind can result in a present they could both love.
